Over Memorial Day weekend, I had the pleasure of chatting with acufacialist Shellie Goldstein, who caters to a number of celebrity clients at her Amagansett, NY, practice. We got to talking about skin type versus skin condition — skin type is something you are born with, while your skin condition is determined by your diet, your stress level, and your skin care regimen. There are five types of skin — dry, sensitive, oily, normal, and combination — and basically, you're stuck with the one you've got.
You can, however, change your skin condition by finding the right products for your face. Welcome to Part I of my five-part series on fantastic facial creams for each of the five skin types. Here are three great products best suited to oily skin.
Yon-Ka Creme PG ($43) is a lightweight and non-greasy lotion that helps balance oil production in your skin. It controls shine, tightens the pores, and fights blemishes. Made with retinol, burdock, vitamin A, and climbing ivy, it will give your skin a terrific matte finish. You can use it in the evening or in the morning as a base for makeup.

Dermalogica Oil Control Lotion ($33) is a light moisturizer intended for super-oily skin. It helps combat shine and tighten up large and inflamed pores, and since it contains salicylic acid, it also helps fight blemishes. It can be used as an all-over facial moisturizer or just in your T-Zone where shine is most apparent.
Peter Thomas Roth Oil-Free Moisturizer ($42) is an oil-free facial cream with a gel-like texture that is great if you're prone to blemishes. It is formulated with azulen and Vitamins A and E and will help soothe and hydrate skin without making it look or feel greasy.

My problem is that I have a combination of oily and sensitive skin, and sometimes get dry patches. Yuck. Oily skin products are typically too harsh and cause me to break out. Sensitive skin products work significantly better, but then I'm always a little oily.
3I use the Peter Thomas Roth and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
4I'm currently using the whole PTR line and I am having great results. A good buy for summer.
5Thanks so much for this, Bella! My skin has been so oily lately, I've been searching for the perfect moisturizer!
6I have really oily skin, and every moisturizer I ever tried either made my skin oily and broken out, or overmedicated and flaky. Now I use two drops of plain jojoba oil – my skin feels soft and smooth, doesn't get greasy, and red marks from blemishes fade much quicker. I gave up on moisturizers!
7Yay, thanks for the info.I have cily skin and moisturizers are hard to find.Keep it coming!
8Sassette, I use jojoba too and love it! Another good oily skin product is Decleor Aromessence Ylang Ylang Oil. It's a little expensive, but you only need a couple drops as well.
9I use St. Ives oil free moisturizer with some Avon mattifer and it's been working fabulous. I wish that it had sunscreen in it, but I'll take what I can for now. These are all a little expensive for me, particularly when cheaper seems to be doing the job.
10Once again I'm putting forth my love for Patricia Wexler. For the acne prone and the sensitive skinned...people like me...
I like this line the best! Proactive killed my skin, ddf, ptr, and Mario Badescu lines were all too drying for my sensitive skin and reddened me up instead of giving me happy dewy clear dream skin.
Thats where Patricia Wexler has changed my game! If you're interested, check it out at bathandbodyworks.com
11That's the only drawback to the jojoba oil... no SPF. But it's inexpensive and works like crazy!
12I recommend Decleor's ylang ylang as well!
13sinplicit - for a great face wash, check out Mario Badescu (online or via Henri Bendel). I use the glycolic wash every evening and I LOVE it. For the AM I use less harsh Borba clarifying skin cleanser. I'm a product junkie, and I've settled on these two-- they work wonderfully.
14i have been using La Roche-Posay , effacler (sp)oil control lotion and i love it!! it has changed the texture of my skin by easing the old oil production. I just thought i'd put up an inexpensive brand up.
15Really? Would you really pay $44 for a cleanser??
16Ok, so I have incredibly oily skin and it does tend to get dry every once and a while if I am not careful. My birth control finally cleared my acne but I am still hesitant to try new products out of fear that I will have an outbreak again. So I am looking for advice...I am so sick of blotting my nose every hour to take off the shine and oil. I want a product that won't cause another acne outbreak and at the same time stop making my face so darn oily! I don't know which product to chose. I like to moisturize in the morning and evening.
17Hey Bella, I have a question about oily skin though. See I have like oily or combination skin... I'm not sure. And every night, before I sleep, I cleanse my face and then I put vaseline (petroleum jelly) on my face as a moisturizer, eye cream, and lip balm. So I just realized that maybe that's the cause of the oiliness or that maybe that's making my oily skin even worse. I just really need to know! So please help!
BTW I've pasted this comment in like two other places too lol sorry, so if u see them just ignore them.
18Thnx
I wish there were some cheaper recommendations here, I'd never spend that much money on a cleanser.
