Well, the corn-toothed brigade isn't going to like this bit of news: Dentists are dissing tooth-whitening services done at salons, and now the Matlocks of the world are stickin' their litigious noses into the issue.
Here's the deal: Many salon owners who already provide spa services (such as brow waxing and spray tanning) have added tooth-whitening to their list. They say it's a cosmetic service, but people like Dr. Leslie Seldin, a spokesperson for the American Dental Association, feel otherwise. And now that lawsuits are beginning to pop up, it may just be a matter of time before regulations declare who can perform tooth-whitening services. Would you get (or have you had) whitening sessions outside of a dentist's office?

Aside from using some drugstore whitening products, I don't think I'd ever go to anyone other than a dentist for a whitening procedure. Doesn't sound too smart.
1I haven't seen them at salons but I have seen them in the mall. It's a little stand in the middle of the mall and has a curtain. Poeple actually do it too! Its about $400!
I dont know if thats cheaper or about the same but I personally would never do something like that out of the dentists office!

yeah, no. I want someone who studied teeth to work on my teeth in their professional environment. not some lady who took a crash course in teeth whitening but is used to waxing brows.

6I will (and have tried) the drugstore whitening products (and Super Smile) however aside from those items, the only person I would trust with whitening my teeth is my dentist. Salons and spas should not be toying around with this; do one thing incorrect and they could cause severe damage to your teeth. A dentist has been taught at length about the use of whitening products. So, I agree with ADA.
7I used the crest whitestrips too and they really worked!! But, going to my dentist seems more practical than any place else if I had to.

9I'm sorry but is anyone truly dumb enough to get their teeth whitened anywhere other than a real dentist??? Aside from the drugstore kits, teeth whitening should be done by a professional who has studied teeth. And, I know some dentists only charge about $250-$300 for this procedure so why would you pay more to get it from a non-professional???
10never. it is dangerous enough and i'm not getting it yet. not to mention getting it from unprofessional aesthetician. ew. next thing you know you can't chew your food cause your teeth are so sensitive.
11I would stick with the dentist whitening my teeth. There isn’t any way in knowing if someone who is whitening my teeth in a mall has the experience or the knowledge to actually do it properly. So I'll stick with someone who has studied teeth.

13They have kiosks in malls where people get their teeth whitened. There's always someone getting it done. Doesn't make it a great idea though.
14but is teeth whitening really something that you have to be a dentist to do? sounds a little excessive to say "only a dentist can touch my teeth". if teeth whitening is not a complicated thing to do, then salons should be able to do it. are tanning salon employees dermatologists? No?
15i'd be too afraid that i'm gonna get ripped off or something will happen. i definitely trust a dentist more at whitening my teeth than oh, say, someone that was trained to do it in less than a week.
16Definitely a dentist. My mother is a dentist and she has always warned me that whitening can weaken your enamel if not done properly and done too frequently. Teeth are important! But then again, I would never trust anyone with any part of my body without knowing they had the proper experience and credentials.
17The salons at the Galleria in Roseville don't even have curtains. You can just walk by seeing people get their teeth done, it's a really rather odd thing to see in the middle of the mall.
18I saw a 1 hour teeth whitening booth whilst shopping with two of my friends - a dental hygienist and a dentistry student. They questioned the girl at the booth about her qualifications and the safety of this treatment. Needless to say, she'd had no dental training and didn't really know anything.
You'd have to be insanely stupid to trust anyone other than a qualified dentist for this.
19I would never get anything done on my teeth unless it was done by a dentist. Same thing goes for hair removal (no, I wouldn't get that done by a dentist)...I saw a news expose on a salon that burned a bunch of customers via lazer hair removal - I would go to a doctor or dermatologist for that kind of stuff!
20I would only see a dentist unless I was doing it myself with a drug store kit. Thankfully whitening toothpaste does the trick with me!
21I'm an esthetician at a day spa. Our spas offer a whitening treatment, I won't mention the name of the company that provides it. It actually isn't performed by estheticians where I work. The spa directors and some front desk personnel attend training with the company to learn how to perform it. I don't know too much about it but I think it's similar to Zoom Whitening. Anyway there is a list of questions that they must as clients to judge whether or not they are good candidates for it. I have to admit it's not very popular and, judging by the reactions here, I can see why!!
