In a word — yep. According to The New York Times, a recent promotion at Barneys New York proved that women are purchasing more lipstick, even if they're spending a little less and choosing more conservative colors. While women may be doing less purchasing, the 75 cosmetics-counter workers at Barneys have not had their hours cut — an impressive feat.
And although super-posh Barneys has felt the effects of the weakening marketplace, women are still clamoring for their favorites. I guess there are some things we can't live without. It's the classic "lipstick factor" in action. How about you? Are you choosing more subtle shades due to the recession, or have your beauty habits remained mostly unchanged?

My beauty habits have remained the same... just a little concealer, eyebrow grooming and lipgloss. =)
1I have never worn much makeup but when I do I always go for subtle, so my habits have remained the same.
2I really don't splurge that much on make-up anymore - but I tend to receive a lot of SEPHORA giftcards, so that's when I tend to treat myself. I try to make my make-up last longer and try to finish everything off before I'm off to buy something new. I guess that's my way of "saving."
3I have to go to the other end of the city to get to Sephora, and I used to enjoy ordering off the website since it's quick & easy, but I've switched to products that I can readily buy anywhere. I used to use Imju Fiberwig mascara, but I use DiorShow now. I have to admit I'm not trying new shades and I'm making do with what I have. The recession hasn't hit quite as hard in Canada, but I am still being cautious. I'm still sticking with my favorites - Dior face products for example, but on things I care less about (like bodywash) I'm substituting with cheaper drugstore brands.
4I really always liked the lighter shades anyhow so I don't think my habits have changed.
5Aside from buying lipsticks from MAC, I don't think my habits changed much. I'm still just using a little bit of lipstain and mascara.
6Nah I'm just getting older and I don't think big bright eye shadows really work on people as they get older...sorry. My habits are pretty much the same.
7If anything..with all the amazing collections for spring (and now summer) im spending at least £1000 more a month on getting my hair done and make-up and treatments.. yet.. not a single new pair of shoes and very few clothes. I guess Im just treating the body not the packaging!
Lipstick shades are as varied as ever.. i think its a waste of money to survey peoples shopping habbits.
8I wear whatever colors I feel like wearing no matter what, including red.
9quite the opposite really, lancome's spring pink irreverence line, anyone?
10I've never really been one for overly bright colors, unless they're used as subtle accents. I much prefer sheer neutral shades. Always have--has nothing to do with the recession!
11I wear none or subtle shades anyway but I can see why people would choose more conservative colors. They're more versatile opposed to a red lip which really isn't going to work unless you're going out or rocking a Dita von Tease-esque look.
12My habits haven't changed much. Except now I wear lipstick.
