It's curly-haired Bella back with an update for all my no-poo and plopping pals. I've been keeping my regimen of sulfate-free shampoo and recently added a new step: Since I'm still feeling on the right side of my upside-down drying technique (aka plopping), I've taken to doing this while in the shower as well.
No, I'm not a gymnast – I bend down so the top of my head faces my toes. You see, when adding conditioner, this position helps work the product into the whole scalp before naturally running down the tresses . . . and not just coating the top layers. My curly-haired expert told me this would also not weigh down my waves and, although I was skeptical, it totally works. Learn the steps when you read more.
- Squeeze conditioner into your hands and bend at the waist.
- Apply conditioner to your hair (while bent over) taking care to begin at the scalp and work your way down gently, detangling as you go.
- Plop hair into a plastic shower cap and you're back upright for the rest of the shower.
- When it's time to rinse the conditioner, bend back over and rinse it out this way as well. [Note: If you don't have a hand-held shower attachment, this will take some special breathing or nose-plugging skills to not have water shoot right into your upside-down nose.]
Come to think of it, I always apply my postshower products on my curly hair in this position, so why was I surprised at my success? Now, turn your beauty routine upside down, and let me know how it goes for you!

this works for straight hair as well, for different reasons...i noticed that my hair would get weighed down because the conditoner was mainly on my scalp - so my scalp would be oily while my hair would be dry. if you turn your head upside down in the shower and work your conditioner from the ends upward, you get condition and root volume
1I have been doing this on and off for a while now. It really does work.
2LOL...I have been doing this for years, except I don't put a shower cup on since I have waaaaaaaaaaay too much hair, volume and length wise. After I apply conditioner, I simply twist it in a loose bun at the crown and secure it with a giant hair clip or two. Shower cup is handy if one was to leave the conditioner for a long period of time as a mask.
3interesting really...
4i would try this
Bella, tonight!!!
i have been plopping since you posted about it and am hooked. i will try to add this method tonight
5Keep in mind that you can skip plopping if you have do in mind that requires less body. That is the beauty of this approach it is flexible.
Now can we have posts about curly styles.....pretty please.
6So THATS plopping! I never knew this but as a curly haired person I would occasionally do this to add my styling products. But I really want to try DevaCurl's sulfate-free shampoo as well!
7plopping hasn't really worked for me...my hair is more curly when I take the towel off my head but not even remotely close to dry after a good hour and a half. And when I DO take the towel off to finally let it dry, the weight of my wet hair loosens the curls so its pretty useless. I will try it in the shower though!
8hmm this sounds cool i think i am going to try it!
9Can't do a regular terry cloth towel with curly hair. It's better to use an old cotton t-shirt!
10Very interesting...
11Makes sense....my hairdresser said your scalp doesn't need as much oil since the gland is right there, but since the hair itself is dead the ends need much more conditioner than the top.
12You've been reading my mind, Bella! Since I started the SLS/plopping regimen a few weeks ago, my curls look amazing - except I noticed this weekend it's pretty flat at the scalp. I'll try that the next time I wash my hair, thanks for the tip!
13I usually do this put i start from the ends to the scalp, easier to detangle.
14i usually just put conditioner on the ends of my hair (hold it like a ponytail then apply it). but i cant leave it till the end to rinse, because then the conditioner will get on my face and back and make me break out. so i always rinse before washing my face and body.
15After viewing the before and after shots on their website it looks as if it takes away a lot of curliness. Personally, I don't want that. For the fear of losing any bit of my beautiful curls I won't try this product. But 100% less frizz sounded oh-so-nice (so very, very nice).
