Since I've been trying to stretch the time between waxes with tweezing, my postrecession scheduling earned me a "long time!" exclamation at the salon door. Call me extra aware but chatting with my esthetician revealed these three easy things to do before waxing . . . that can be equally easy to forget:
- Lightly exfoliate. Some skin is sensitive to this process and you may see tiny pimples postwaxing. Before you go in, lightly exfoliate the brow area. This can help clear impacted follicles and remove dead skin cells for a clean slate.
- Bare before beautiful brows. If you know you're going in for facial waxing, avoid wearing foundation or any liquid products that can interfere with the working wax. (I stopped in after brunch and my makeup needed to be removed – oops!)
- Powdered down. You may notice your esthetician powdering your brows as she starts. The reason? It absorbs any excess oil or moisture. The drier the skin, the better the wax will adhere to it. So show up with clean, dry skin or lightly powder it yourself and save that step.

Good tips, I always keep these in mind. I never wear make-up though so I don't have to worry about that one..
1Why not thread instead of wax?
2I don't get my brows waxed...but they sound like good tips!
3I've been thinking about getting my eyebrows waxed, and I haven't done it before, so I'll definitely keep these things in mind.
4I don't have to get mine waxed.
5Way too much prep...I get threading done, walk in walk out, look fabulous! No prep needed.
6im with the other ladies....threading is the way to go. half the cost, twice the longevity.
7For me not matter what I did the wax irritated/and sometimes scarred my skin. I went to a really nice reptuable salon too. I have since then gone back to threading which takes a little longer but gives you the same look and is seriously way cheaper. There is an Indian Salon on University St in Berkeley thats nice clean and only charges 8 bucks!
8Agreed that threading is the way to go - I got my eyebrows waxed for the first time when I was younger and had red marks for DAYS afterwards... not to mention it hurt like a biatch!!! my friend introduced me to threading and I havent looked back - there's places that will do it for under 10 bucks, which is awesome!
9Threading is seriously so much better and less painful. I do not recommend waxing!
10I've never had threading done, but I love having my eyebrows waxed.
11Interesting.
My eyebrows don't need to be waxed either. I do a better job shaping and manicuring my eyebrows with tweezers.
12I've been waxing myself at home since way before it was age appropriate (mom owned a nail salon), and I don't get much redness or bumps, but I have ripped off skin and had a scab form a few times. Each time it was due to carelessness- either the wax was too hot, or not hot enough and applied too thickly. However, I've started using hard wax, and it doesn't have these problems. I read up on this type of wax in an aesthetician's textbook, and hard wax (or stripless wax) used to be the standard type of wax used in salons before strip wax, which is the kind that's used in most salons now. Strip wax only became popular because it is faster to work with (no need to wait for wax to cool/harden). But I'm never really in a rush, so for personal use, hard wax is so much better. If you're a regular waxer and want to try doing it at home, you should look into it. It's messy at first but once you get the hang of applying the wax in thick, even patches, you'll find it a great convenience.
13I would go with threading if I could find a good person. The last time I got my brows threaded, the lady nearly removed them all and it took forever for them to grow back in...they are still thin in places.
