Last year, I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Howard Murad, who shared his advice on achieving healthy skin. And now, through his Inclusive Health Center, he has more sage words about the correlation between how your health and appearance are affected by your emotional state. Here are some of my favorites:
- Breakfast: Don't skimp on the most important meal of the day. Eat a metabolism- and appearance-boosting balanced breakfast of grains, whole oats, eggs, and fresh fruit.
- Sleep: Get your eight hours in, and "use topical and internal products with ingredients such as melatonin and GABA that add depth to your sleep and your skin’s sleep repair cycle," says Dr. Murad.
- Flax seed and fish oil: Not only should you moisturize your skin in the AM and the PM, but take supplements with hydrating essential fatty acids, like flaxseed and fish oil, too.
- Three good things: At the end of the day, write down three good things that happened that day. "This is my #1 recommendation to improve emotional self-care," he adds.
- Supplements: Take glucosamine, which helps to increase the water content in your body. For production of collagen and elastin, look to amino acids. "Think of your daily supplements as insurance that guarantees you’ll maintain the nutrient levels you need to look and live your best," advises Dr. Murad.

I like that he has a holistic approach. Take care of your inside and your outside will glow!
1I like the whole "3 good things" approach. Your looks are def a reflection of how you feel...
2Yikes...the only one of these tips that I do routinely is eating breakfast. Most nights I get 8 hours of sleep but some nights it just doesn't work out. Dr. Murad says to take melatonin supplement...is that safe to do every night? I do like the idea of "3 good things", I should really start doing this.
3if the ideal is 8-hour of sleep, i don't get enough sleep everyday then..
4I've been contemplating taking fish oil supplements for a while now because I don't really eat fish. Is it really that beneficial?
5i've noticed that when i take fish oil supplements, my mood is more regulated.
6love his tips!
7Zinc is also good for the skin.
Note to self: SLEEP MORE!!!
8I just started eating cereal with Flax Seed in it....
I'm on my way!!! Now only if I could get myself to take supplements...bleh.
9Thanks for the tips!
I recently got into flax seed too, Ckeller825...I add it to my yogurt.
10I normally follow most of these, but since I've been sick with Glandular Fever I've been sleeping much more than eight hours a night and still feel tierd!
11fish oil supplements are also good for, umm, relieving constipation(!). Some brands recommend taking 3 per day, but one capsule ever day or 2 seems like enough to me.
12I eat breakfast everyday, I *always* get 8 hours of sleep, I need to get into flaxseed and fish oil, but I do take a women's multivitamin daily! The 3 things thing I am going to start!
13I do have a light breakfast every morning... either consisting of a grapefruit, apple, and oatmeal with flaxseed and blueberries... or I use my expensive juicer to make juices... carrots, apples, oranges, celery, cucumber... it's delicious and soooo healthy and natural. Makes my skin glow!
14I do get 8+ hours of sleep per night. I have the luxury of sleeping in
I eat a lot of fish, so I only take fish oil once in a while.
I probably need to take better care of myself emotionally, so I'll try the 3 good things, starting now!
Supplements... only if I remember or feel kinda dull.
I hate taking suppliments in pill form. I take a "drop and drink" multi from Trader Joe's, but I wish they had more liquid forms (that don't taste horrible).
15I highly recommend eating green bean soup from time to time to detox.
16If you add rock sugar to it, it tastes great.
Pop into the fridge to chill it makes it takes even more luxurious.
Everything undesirable is flushed out.
yes i agree - dr. murad is a genius when it comes to skin care but his products are way too strong.
17i like the 3 things idea, usually when people write bout their lives it's usually what went wrong that day!
18Does this mean we shouldn't use his overpriced skin kits? (being facetious, I actually like one of the kits)
