Every time I get my hair done (or is it did?), my stylist graciously offers me a complimentary bang trim in between services. "Call me anytime," she always says. Why I've never taken her up on her offer, I don’t know.
Even though I am pretty skilled at trimming my own bangs — or so I think — there is never anything quite like the precision cutting that my stylist can achieve. So, I'm taking her up on her offer this time around and popping in for that trim. This got me to thinking about what's a customary tip for a free service like this. So, I consulted one of my former stylists from the Chicago days, Veronica Rubio, owner of Salon V, to ask her opinion. She says:
Five dollars on the low end, ten dollars on the high end, judged on the level of regular haircut price. It's usually 10 percent of the regular haircut price.
And there you have it.

L.a.p.a.
I work at a Salon & Spa and would say $5 is pretty normal.
1I'd say $5 but I've always trimmed my own.
2awesome to know!
3i always drop in between cuts with my stylist and she not only trims my bangs (dry) but she kinda gives me an all over clean up, especially the front pieces and then (dry) blows out my hair a little bit so i always leave looking 10x better than i looked going in
it takes her about 20 mins probably and it's complimentary and i've tipped 5$ before but i think her level of service requires a bit more...it it was 10% of the total cut then it would be able 6$ but i tend to offer a ten dollar bill
We are not allowed to tip at my salon, so that solves that problem (although I've never gone in for this).
4is tipping normal in UK? i never know, sounds so american and unnecessary.
5skigurl, sometimes i go to a salon and it takes them 20min altogether to trim my hair and blow dry it. (am still looking for a good salon).
6Me too, aimeeb.
7well the beauty salon i go to over charges so i dont tip
8I tip between $5-$7 for bang trims.
9I only tip if I'm getting a cut and style.
10its so funny that this was just posted.
even though my stylist always suggests a free bang trim I usually just do it myself. This past weekend i decided to pop in for a bang trim from her and i couldnt find any information on how much to trip for a free bang trim
anyway, i tipped five.
11This has nothing to do with the question, but anyway - in Australia, we don't say "bangs", we say "fringe". Bangs reminds me of something vaguely dirty so when I read "bang trim", I couldn't help but get the giggles. Complimentary bang trim is even better.
Sorry, infantile I know, but whatever
12I so wish my salon offered free bang trimming between cuts. It's never been offered to me.
(How's that for dirty, Louie?
)
13Oh yeah, KMattes. You know dirty! lol
14Allytta a tip shows the staff just how great of a service they're doing and how happy you are. Usually a thank you is awesome but a tip means a coffee at the end of the night or a few extra cents onto a pay packet. It is a mainly American thing but it's catching on in Australia.
I really hate it when I bust my gut trying to satisfy people, they spend two hundred dollars and cant spare a fifty cent tip for me. And I've waited on them hand and foot for three hours. It blows because I feel like my all my work has been for nothing.
However for a quit bang trim I'd probably offer a fiver, just because you feel so good after you leave.
15Autumns_El, i guess if they spend 200 it makes sense, but I always try to go for 30 bucks for a hair cut
(poor student here) but yeah, i'm in service indutry and it annoys the heck out of me when rich bastards don't tip.
but with a haircut i always feel that when i give them my money - i already paid for all of their hard work.
16Louie, the link I followed stopped with "free bang". I really wanted to know how much to "tip for a free bang"!
17I never tip for trimming my bangs. -_-"
18I don't tip... I think free should mean just that.
19I have my bangs trimmed same time I have my brows waxed. Then leave a nice tip for the waxing and everyone is happy.
20It's never occurred to me to tip for a free bang trim...it normally takes less than five minutes, and i guess I figure a free trim means just that!
