Ah, the permanent wave. My seventh-grade self had some questionable taste in hairstyles, and I wanted a spiral perm so badly. (All the popular girls had them.) After much nagging, my mother relented and gave me a home perm. It looked as awesome as you can imagine. These days, perms can look much better than they did back in the day. A friend has a digital perm, and it looks super-chic. Have you ever had one?

I had the classic 80s spot perm on my bangs!
For my grade 6 graduation, I asked my mom for a perm.
No one told me how to properly take care of one so I washed my hair before I was supposed too. I ended up with only slight waves on the day of my graduation.
What's a digital perm? I've always wanted curly hair.
I'm curious too. What is a digital perm?
yeah really...what's a digital perm?
what is a digital perm?
Yes, I've had perms before, but not for about 8 years.
i got one when i was in 7th grade because my hair went from straight to fuzzy... waste of money, look at my curls now... well wait no, my hair is straight in my picture, but its curly... and my sister toughed out the fuzzy phase and also has curls now... weird. i was born with it but it randomly went poker straight at ages 4-12, then puberty was setting it n i had an afro-looking puff and i didnt have a straightener and my aunt n uncle owned a salon so i got a great discount on a perm :] the smell is atrocious, i will never forget. haha
No and I never ever would.
digital perm gives you very loose waves. almost beachy, but more put together.
Yeah, but.. a straight perm. I don't know what you call them.. japanese perms or something like that? It transformed my usually-frizzed hair to straight and shiny hair. Really good experience, I recommend it.
My mom let me do this when I was in 5th grade. I was so excited! Unfortunately, my hair took to it much better than the stylist thought it would which resulted in extremely tight curls and fried hair. I still shudder at the thought of my school picture that year.
I still get perms. I am Korean and have stick straight hair but prefer a natural wave, so I get a soft wave perm. It's so easy to maintain and everyone loves my "sexy hair". The chemicals used by my Japanese stylist are very gentle and I never have a poodle perm, just soft beachy waves.
my mom never let me
and somehow after my teenage years i didn't want it anymore.
Yes, when I was quite young I used to get them done, I have a picture of me, & I look like a 6 year old grandma, but i do remember some of them coming out good.
I had a couple of perms when I was 14 and 15, and they were great! I had hair like Baby from "Dirty Dancing." Totally a good look for me. Loved it! My hair now is naturally curly/wavy, and I like it, so no more perms for me.
Oh my goodness yes! My mom permed my hair regularly from the time I was 6 or 7 right through highschool whether I wanted one or not!
Ugh. I guess she had some unresolved 'issues' about her hate-on for her own stick-straight hair growing up. Looking back at pictures, my hair had beautiful wave even as a kid! I have no idea why she thought it was necessary. I'll probably get cancer from all the developmental exposure to toxic chemicals.
I haven't had one for at least 10 years now and never plan on getting another one. I like my hair just the way it is.
Yes, for a year and it destroyed my hair. It probably doesn't help that you have to perm my hair twice back-to-back in order for the curl to stay and even then it lasts about two months, three months tops.
I was up-sold by a stylist into getting a perm and it destroyed my normally healthy hair. Although it looked cute for the weeks I had it, my long hair was tangled and the ends became extremely dry. I hated it and will do it again.
I had perms back in the late 80's and early 90's. They would last for almost a year as my hair has a natural wave to it. I liked them but would never do it now. I work to hard to try and get the curl out of it these days
i've had a digital perm for several years, done about every six months. i love it! the best thing about this perm is that you just put product in it, and let it air dry. it's the easiest thing to maintain. it definitely will damage your hair though, so you will have to make sure you use high quality products to help your hair stay moisturized and as healthy as possible.
I had one perm, one time. Never again! I am sure it was not the stylist's fault, but it just looked awful. Worst "beauty-related" money I ever spent!
my friend got a digital perm and it made her more voluminous and actually cut down her routine...she just wash and goes..it came out pretty nice
Oh, hell yeah...I was a child of the 80s! I've had more perms than you can count! LOL. But my last one was in 1991, so those days are long gone!
Yeah, i'm more then due for one right now. I would like to make it permanent though, via Japanese straightening.
Back in the 80's I had the perms and spiral perms for long hair. That was the rage back then. By the time the 90's rolled along I quit getting them because they were damaging my hair. I lost alot of shine from them. Once I got the perms out of my hair, it was quite healthy and shiny with highlites again.
I just got my first one a few days ago, great article timing Bella! So far I am really loving it. I recurl it in the mornings to get the perfect spirals I want but since it is already curly it takes the curl much quicker and I need a lot less product to make it stay. My hair before was stick straight and always in my face and drove me nuts which is why I decided to get a perm. My hair was really healthy so it is still shiny and soft, just curly!
hate the smell of perms. pooo!
I live in Korea and pretty much every woman over the age of 18 has a perm. These guys have mastered the art. Younger women get digital perms for the wavy look and older women get super-curly perms.
I got a digital perm last year and loved it. Ended up trading it in for a pixie crop though.
Nope. I never personally had a perm, nor would I want to get one. Perms stink. Besides, I don't think my hair will take to it very well if at all since it's so thick and straight (and kind of poofy at the bottom).
Of course I did! I was into all the fads! The 80's was all about Perms and teased hair! I had a home made perm non the less!
Then in the 90's I did the Brenda Walsh bangs! LOL!
Have had many perms but none in the last 8 years.
That is my 6th grade story verbatim! It was aweful. I couldn't do it so I brushed it into a poof ponytail until it grew out.
