It's happened to my mom, it's happened to me, and it's happened to my grandma. Each of us, at some point or another, has experienced toenail loss. In my particular situation, it occurred in college, when I was sprucing up a hand-me-down sofa, and accidentally dropped a can of upholstery cleaner on my tootsies. Ouch.
Eventually, my injured toenail slipped off, and to fill the void left by my absentee nail, I fashioned up a faux nail by making use of some cheery polish, along with a steady hand. Have you ever had to create your own makeshift toenail, or have your nails remained intact?

Urban Decay
lol...all the time and you wouldn't even know it if the polish is done right!!
Yep, after running both my half marathon and full marathon, I lost a toenail... and with a little bit of polish, no one was the wiser!
In fact, a friend of mine permanently lost a big toenail after a car accident, so she has an acrylic one placed when she gets pedicures at her local salon - you can't even tell the difference!
Ha! I just finished doing that. Half of my toenail cracked off this morning for some reason.
no, i left it bare, so it looked like i had 4 toe nails for 2 weeks.. haha
it has only happened to me once, when i was 13. i just left it alone.
This has never happened to me. I never do anything remotely dangerous (like moving furniture and stuff) without proper shoes on. My dad made me do this, as a way to protect me from that probably very painful injury.
ouch, this whole post made me flinch. i don't think putting nail polish on a wound (that's how i imagine a toe without a nail) is OK. anyway, losing a nail is one of my biggest fears.
I did this once. I dropped something on my big toe and lost part of the nail for almost a year. I live in the land of open toe shoes and was just embarrassed by not having a decent looking nail. I ended up getting a press on nail from the pharmacy and painting it until it grew back. Prior to that I always wondered what was the need for press on toe nails.
I am 33 and that has never happened to me. Hopefully I won't ever have to make that decision!
nope because I've only lost my toe nail in the winter under socks! lol
I basically do this every time. My pinky toe nails are really small, and if I only paint them you barely see it, so I paint outside the nail on purpose so that it looks like I have a nail. I did actually lose a big toenail once (not from any one injury, but from dancing on pointe), and I didn't do it then. It was winter at the time, and it grew back by the time it was warm enough for sandals.
Losing a nail sounds very painful. If I ever lost a nail though I would probably paint it!
I've never lost a toenail. When I was in first grade, though, my super-long pinky nail (I needed to clip it) got stuck on the carpet at school and was pulled off. It hurt so bad. But I was really too young to be painting it over with nail polish. I don't think that sounds like something I would do now either.
oh gosh this made me squeam. ew.
I have never lost a nail, but I've on more than one occassion cut my pinkie toenail way too short and, to compensate, painted the little bit aong with the skin in front of it. it didn;t hurt at all, and it looked so much better than leaving it blank...
i hate feet so extremely bad that aside from keeping mine sanitary and all the disgusting dead skin off and nails trimmed i have NO idea why women paint their toe nails, at least not in attention grabbing shades. where did this crap start? in Egypt just like the rest of make-up/body adornment history? i think that unless you live in a coastal/beach area, sandals and flip flops should be banned from being worn by both men and women.
one time my whole toenail ripped off the middle one, and I.. xD used some Halloween latex to make a fake nail, and painted over it! it uhh didn't work LoL
ALL THE TIME! I have very short toe nails (as I'm always told when I get them done) so I'm always painting outside them, and I also have lost quite a few for various reasons--its actually not as bad as it sounds to paint, mine weren't wounds per se, they more so grew a hardish layer while the nail grew back that I painted! (I think I have one painted right now actually!)
I've never had one.
I painted the gross nail before it fell off as it turned black, but didn't care once it fell off and a new one was growing back. I lost it from a marathon where my shoe rubbed on my toe box too much.
I had given myself a luxurious pedicare before vacation and noticed my 3rd toenail was coming off!! I actually used glue to keep it on for a beach vacation and it didn't fall completely off until I got home! So, yes, I am now painting a nub!
LoL, uhm...yeah i just kept my foot in a sock until my nail grew out to an acceptable length!!!!
I've never had this happen. But I live in the land of Chuck Taylors so if it did, no one would know!
I've never had a nail fall off, but last summer we painted my roomie's big toe bandaid with a fake nail... you couldn't really tell in sandals, but it looked kinda hilarious close up.
oh yeah i had to get my big toenail surgically removed due to an injury n boy wuz that painful u cant even touch the wound for a month only when changin the dressing ehh..but its growin back n i do use nailpolish on it lol it looks funny
I might have to have a toenail removed because of a possible melanoma, and after reading these posts I'm relieved because it sounds like I have options to make it blend in!!
Oh man, how appropriate for me. I broke my dominant thumb in two places a couple months ago and the nail has only halfway grown in. I think it's now long enough for me to go get a fake. I'm tired of wearing a bandaid to cover up how weird it looks!
This article was too gross, but I have like freakishly tiny toenails (thank God because I hate toe nails), and I never paint the skin around. It just peels off or flakes off so quick.
I have creepy stubby little pinky toenails naturally, they're miniature and point straight up. They're about the surface size of a pencil tip. I usually just dot them with whatever color I'm using and move along.
On an unrelated note, for some reason I wear fingernail polish off REALLY quickly, whereas toenail polish can stay for months if I don't change it (and I wear flip flops regularly, too).
Ewwww no-infection!!
I never have, but my mom has never had a nail on her left pinkie toe so she just paints it a little to blend in.
Well I dropped a grilling spatula on my toe and it turned black right at the cuticle. It took about six/eight months to completely grow out. But I never lost it, fortunately. I did paint it all the time though.
Haha ya I've done this before - I lost my big toe a couple years ago due to a tragic incident with a can of diced tomatoes. I am a flip flop finatic (and of course this happened in the spring just as the snow was melting) so I just painted it up and you wouldn't know unless you looked really close up to it. I just stubbed my toe so bad today which it how I came across this. Its bleeding and I think its probably gonna happen again
Its such a gross/painful experience.
Thank gawd for cute nail polish
