If you think false eyelashes are glamorous, wait until you see eyelash extensions. Just as their name implies, they're a lot like hair extensions—but for the eyes, natch. At first, I thought the concept was a little goofy, and that mascara was doing a perfectly good job of making me look doe-eyed and lovely. But then I was offered the chance to try a set for free, and, well, now I feel naked without them. For a step-by-step account of the in-spa procedure, read more
I headed to The Lashe Spot in Chicago, where estheticians use semi-permanent Xtreme Lashes brand. While I reclined in a comfy spa chair, Ignacia, my esthetician, started by applying an anti-wrinkle pad to isolate my bottom eyelashes. From there, I had to keep my eyes closed, but Ignacia walked me through the process. She swabbed each eyelash with a bonding agent, then used tweezers to affix the extensions individually. As you can imagine, this process takes time. A lot of time. But about 90 minutes later, I could barely believe my eyes.
My lashes were full, thick, and long—and best of all, they looked completely natural, too. Over the next few weeks, strangers commented on what beautiful eyelashes I had (when does that happen?!) and I never got accustomed to waking up and looking bright-eyed. My lovely look lasted about two months (since the extensions are attached to single eyelashes, they fall out when the eyelashes do).
The only thing holding me back from getting extensions again (and again and again) is the price. The Lashe Spot charges $350 for first-time clients, then $100/hour for refills; prices vary from $200 to $600 in spas across the US. So while the end result is genuinely amazing, it's expensive. But for a big occasion such as a wedding, it's worth the splurge.

I've heard about this before... If I were made of money I would do this all the time, but I'm not. *sigh* Sounds wonderful...
1I wish I could do something like this. I can't seem to get lashes!
2Ack...I was so excited when I saw the title for this article...and then I saw the prices, lol. -___- I guess I'll just be sticking to regular old false eyelashes for a long while.
3my mom does lash extensions at her office. I LOVE having them as i have stumpy lashes.
i think she does it for about 150.... in so cal/ north san diego area??? hit me up, i'll get ya in
4There is a lash extension place-not like a spa but a nic salon nonetheless-near my work who charges only $75. I was thinking of trying them but now I am hesitant. The price difference is huge. I wonder if the quality is significantly lower. Has anyone found lash extensions for a lower price?
5My friend got these done in Chicago- maybe at the same place? And she uses the time to nap as they apply them haha. She LOVES them! They do require a bit of extra care but they really do make a difference in her appearance.
6Wow, I've been wanting to do this..... Thanks for sharing this information; I've read about it in the fashion rags, but hearing a tried and true experience makes all the difference.
7Misskastar, $75 sounds like an amazing deal. I would just (nicely) ask questions about who's doing it, what kind of training they've had, how many times they've done the procedure, et cetera. Then again, I suggest doing this whether it costs $75 or $350—anytime someone is coming near my eye, you can bet I want to know what kind of experience they have!
8I'd just buy the glue and a set of individual false lashes and do it myself. Granted, the false lashes won't look quite the same, but it still makes your eyelashes look awesome.
9Wow, I've never thought about getting eyelash extensions before, but now I really want to try it. It is pricey, but like you said, for a big event it might be worth it.
10Bellasugar, they must get you addicted to so many fun new things!
11I wish I could afford to do this all the time!
12Hee! Yes, I'm lucky — I get to try out a lot of new things, but so far I haven't gone back for eyelash extensions. If money were no object, though, I'd probably get them every six weeks.
13I got them done for my girlfriend's wedding in LA and LOVED IT! They made a HUGE difference since i have really sparce lashes. =( However, for $300, it is quite a bit to shell out! UNTIL...a girlfriend of mine found a place in the north bay that did hers for $190. It turned out beautifully and she's planning on going back to have them refilled next month, i'm going to have to tag along!!
14looks soo good!! wish i could do it!!
15This has been around for a while and I have been addicted since a year ago when I spotted a girl with longer then average lashes and I was jealous and she let me in on her secret! If you go to your local nail salon you can test out what it would be like with eye lash extensions not the semi permanent type but individaul clusters with bunches of 6 lashes per cluster thingy they will last up to 4 weeks if you do you it right took me a few times to realize how to maintain them but for 20$ I couldnt complain! I am now ready for the next step! Its Huge in Miami!
16I wish I could afford it!!! I have really really short eye lashes!
17Hey guys. I have been getting them done for about 6 months, so technically 3 times. You really need to make sure the place is clean ... and it is done properly. Apparently your eyelash area has larger than normal pores where your eyelashes grow, so dirt easily gets in and can cause eye styes (an infection of the eyelash hair follicle). This is not serious per se, but deffinitely not cute and uncomfortable. It can last for a month or more. Imagine a large, red, inflamed bump on your eye lid. I have seen this happened to about two of my friends.
18Cheers,
So would this be better than Talika in terms of results?
19It's more dramatic than Talika. I think Talika makes some great products, but the extensions are in another league. Since the extensions are affixed to your eyelashes, they nearly double in length. It really is "Bambi eyes," but as I wrote, the price reflects that...
20what exactly is the maintenance?
21any other risks?
I would really consider doing this if I had the money. You really can't go wrong.
22Maintenance involves going in for touch-ups every three weeks or so. I never went in, and they looked good for six weeks—and then just "pretty good" for two more after that.
Risks are minimal as long as you are going to a clean spa/salon and your esthetician is well-trained. Hope this helps!
23wow, wow, wow. I have really short lashes. If it weren't so cost prohibitive, I'd definitely do it.
24Wow I'm not even kidding you I was randomly thinking about eyelash extensions last week. I'm soooo taking this as a sign I should get them. This was super helpful in explaining the process, considering I had no idea what it all entailed. Thanks for this post!
25True, is very addictive and it looks fab! But there are risks, a makeup artist friend of mine told me several clients of hers has been suffering from eye-lashes falling out. Im talking about their own eye-lashes falling out and thining.
And those clients of hers went to reputable esthetician but still...
So yes, there are risks, just becareful.
26Oh I would love to have this done. If you do not retouch them up do they just come out on their own or do they have to remove them. I would love to even try the false lashes but I know I will not be able to glue those things on straight.
27I got lash extensions before and i loved them. and yeah, the only thing holding me back is the price. well maybe after i find a job, i can afford them.
28hello to everyone ,,,,,i am ignacia from the Lashe spot ,,,,there was many concerns of it costing to much ,,,,,,the salon also has 'FEATHER EYES' which its a fraction of the price $150 you get between30-40 lashes on each eye its not as dramatic as a full set ,,,but it adds alot of flutterness,,,,,,people love it also well any questions about eyelashes extensions i will be happy to answer
29I wanna try this!!!!!!!!!!! I badly need it
30I did it!
31And I absolutely love it!
Amazing! Your lashes look wonderful! I'm sorry you weren't able to go back and get them done again. I would definitely consider this!
32wow, and i thought my eyelashes were long.
33I want it, I want it, I want it! Get that done and throw some weave up in my hair and I'd be good to go. They always turn out so beautifully!
34i did this once
never again. when the extension fell off, they took some of my real lashes too
but i have to admit the result was actually beautiful
35I had this done once. I believe I paid $100.
I
didn't go back for the the "touch up", which supposedly makes the lashes last for a couple of months.
CONS: took a couple of hours, the lady tugged a lot of my eye area (hello, tugging = wrinkles), only looked amazing for a couple of weeks and then the lashes slowly began to fall off and my eyes looked unbalanced... took about a month to come off. Some of my lashes fell off too!
PROS: for a couple of weeks it was so liberating not worrying about mascara. I could step out of the house with lip gloss and still feel pretty. It was fun while it lasted... I'd do it again for a very special occasion or vacation.
36I have been getting my xtreme lashes for about 6 months now. I have just recently developed a type of eyelid dermatitis. My eyelids are swollen and itchy. I am beginning to think it is not worth it. I tried to contact the company to get some answers, but haven't heard. Has anyone else out there had a problem?????
37The Xtreme lash product has to be one of the worse products for eyelash extensions. They are clumpy, look extremely fake and I lost a lot of REAL eyelash from the horrible quality glue they use. I had my beautician use Novalash and they worked a lot better.
38Lora Condon did my eyelash extensions at Magic Hands Skin and Body in Springfield, NJ. Her prices are affordable for the first time and refills are really cheap. She also did an eyelash party for my bridesmaids and it was the best gift i could give them. they calll her the lash dr. for a reason~!
39Hi, This comment is to the person that gets the extreme eyelash extensions and has itchy, swollen eyelids - I have been getting extension "fills" since April of this year. I love them but suddenly (about six weeks ago) I started getting itchy eyelids and if I rubbed them then they would swell up. While it only lasts about 4-5 days after and then it is fine, it is getting progressively worse each time I get them "filled". I don't know what to do as I love my lashes. Didn't know if anyone knows anything about this and what to do....
