Hard to tell with those pics because in one she's really tan and the other extremely pale - but I am gonna go with the darker hair - more natural and beautiful

i hate the whitewashing of women of color that occurs in this damn country. why can't asian women--GASP!--look asian? why must black women have smooth, straight hair? it's just ridiculous and it makes me so angry that the grotesquely thin, uber-plastic, and totally white (but with a tan!) standard is still the bar of beauty by which all women--regardless of ethnicity, size, shape, or age.

I like both for different reasons, but I am going to go with the first pic. She looks completely different when you compare the two.

I prefer the dark hair. Her eyes look much more striking with it.

I'm kinda indifferent to Maggie. But I just wanted to point out to krampalicious, that it's not like she's really being whitewashed here. She is afterall half Irish. And when she was younger her hair was lighter - I dunno about now, it could have gotten darker or perhaps she died it. I know lots of happas with natural light hair. In fact, some of my little cousins have blonde hair and blue eyes and they're half asian.

That's a tough one! She's quite pretty she could probably pull off anything.

To be honest I think she looks too pale with dark brown hair. Maybe it's just the lighting, though.

The caramel color looks perfect on her. It gives her a softer apperence.

It's hard to decide between the two because she looks so different in both pics. With the warmer, more caramel color her skin is tanned so it matches perfectly. With the raven hair, the paler skin looks amazing with it. She has a good stylist. I love both looks. I also love to see women wearing their hair darker.

Not sure if it's the lighting, outfits, or something else altogether but she looks less lively in the pic on the right. So I voted for the lighter hair. It just does more for her complexion.

I don't think dying hair another shade besides black is whitewashing. Just like white women dye their hair different shades, other ethnicities do so as well. Sometimes you just get sick of the same old damn hair color and want a change. It doesn't mean that an asian or black chick want to look more white. I think its ignorant to assume that the only reason for minority women to change their hair color or texture is to be white.

ignorance comes in all forms, poisonivy. it's not just hair that is lightened in that first picture, her overall look is more of the stereotypical "hollywood bronzed goddess." even her eyes look lighter.

the function of social standards of beauty is to impose them without your knowledge, so that when someone is outside the norm, the automatic response is to see them as too different or ugly without realizing exactly why you think that. think about it--why is it that in every social group besides caucasian are the biggest-selling beauty products designed to lighten the skin and straighten and smooth the hair.

standards of beauty are deeper than just the latest products recommended by our intrepid beauty editors--it all goes back to colonialization and the overall system designed to infantilize women by keeping focused on the trivial and the superficial, absorbed within themselves so they have no room focus on the bigger picture.

i love beauty products just as much if not more than anyone, but as we turn our critical eyes upon both ourselves and the celebrities we worship, it's important that we also examine why we feel such a strong desire to conform to standards that may never apply to us personally but are expected of women universally.

I have to agree with your "whitewashing" comment. I think it's pretty dead on. I have to say, though, as a black woman relaxing my hair so that it is "smooth and straight" is necessary. It's the only way to get the shine and managability that I like. I love relaxers, whitewashing or not.

krampalicious, i totally agree with you about that. I think the whole bronze yourself thing is ridicules, not to say the whole whitening skin thing is any better. I think the occasion highlight like that second picture is okay but the first one is commanding to popular society, which in another word is peer pressure. it is not to say i wouldn't perm my hair or put makeup on, but there is a limit to how much one does and what is their comfortable limit, not which is the popular culture's limit/image of the perfect woman.

I think that if she switched her skin colors in these pictures she'd look great with both hair. The caramel highlights would look better on paler skin(too matchy-matchy) with a tan. The dark color would look great with a tan (it washes her out right now)

I think both look great. The first one is a better summer look and the second (which I'm leaning towards as a preference) is great for fall/winter.

Wow, Freshman Psych rears it's ugly head!! (yep, I quoted Clueless) Maybe she just likes her hair this color and wanted a tan.... shocker!! Like someone said before, all races like to change it up every now and then, that does not mean they are trying to be white. I suppose shopping at thrift stores, cutting your hair short, getting piercings and tattoos and being anti-establishment is the only way women can "truly" express themselves huh? As if that look isn't cookie cutter somehow? Really, it's just a look she chose, I don't think it has some deep, spiritual meaning.

The darker shade is MUCH more unique, and i agree with all the people that said she looks too much like your average beverley-hills-i-have-a-heck-of-a-lot-of-money-type-celebrity.
However the lighting in that picture is a little strange- she looks like she has those japanese geisha makeup on (pure white powder type thing)
