Last year, beauty brands hoped that black lips would be big. Unless I missed out on a convention of Bauhaus fans, the sooty-kiss look wasn't an enormous success — going dark just didn't work for most women. Will this season be different? From a sales standpoint, probably so, because Twilight Beauty has a black lip gloss. (The Cullen connection alone will mean they'll sell.) The Volturi Twilight Enrapture gloss ($12) in Arsenic is a licorice-scented sheer gloss with light gold shimmer — so your lips can sparkle like a vamp.

Of course, that's not the only place black is popping up. MAC is about to release an all-noir collection that includes three black lip glosses and two black lipsticks. Already on the market: Lipstick Queen in Black Tie Optional, Shu Uemura in Black 099, and NYX lipstick in Black Onyx. Want to take a baby step into this trend? Go for sheer washes over opaque colors, and consider using these sooty shades to darken your existing lip color.

black gloss = could be okay in moderation
black lipstick = ugh
i think your "baby step" recommendations are on point.
1I have no desire to look like a living dead. Black nail polish is the furthest I go. I also think it accentuates not-perfectly-white teeth.
2Black lipstick and lip gloss? I would never wear it. I hardly even wear black nail polish.
3I'm not a fan of black, but dark lipsticks look great on an amazingly wide range of people! Nars has a great one featured right now and Urban Decay has a few good ones, as well.
4Nail polish - ok but lipstick - that looks good on no one in my opinion.
5man, i love black lipstick! But I have yet to see someone in the real world pull it off without looking like a goth or a vamp.
6I'm thinking, black lipstick + a shiny gloss, matte pale face, long curled dark eye lashes, a sweep of lavender eye shadow across the lid, and perfectly groomed hair would work.
Black works for fashion shoots but not in every day life
7I think koreansugar has got the right idea. I'd like to give that look a try, but I'm older than most of you I'm pretty sure. That said, I don't wanna look like I'm trying to do the teenage thing on an old lady, if you know what I mean.
8The sheer black lip gloss with gold shimmer from the actual Twilight Beauty line actually sounds like it could be pretty.
I'd definitely have to try it on first, but I think it's an interesting idea. I've never heard of a black lipgloss.
9Lancome had a black lip gloss a few months back. It was hideous. You looked like you had dirty water on your lips. Maybe the Twilight one is better, though. Who knows.
10Ugh! I really like some of Lipstick Queen's lipsticks especially the Sinner collection and I actually fell for Black Tie Optional. The website insisted that it make the lips look "just bitten and swollen" and was like "black fishnet stockings only for your lips!" (seriously) They also claimed you could layer it over your other lipsticks to intensify the color whenever you wanted a change.
11Not only was it drying, something I have never experienced with their lipsticks, but it made my lips look just grey and dead, not swollen or bitten, unless I was bitten by a zombie and was slowly starting to resemble one.
So what if you only wear your black lips while cleaning your house or on Halloween- it's still fun to switch things up. That's what's so fun about make-up!
12Ew no thanks
13so i bing'd some images of women in black lipstick and i can totally see this working. it looked best when everything else was flawless and especially beautiful when paired with a pin-up look. i like it.
14haha bella, i guess i'm a history nerd, but when i read bauhaus i though walter gropius and early 20th c. architecture. i've never heard of the band until now.
15Has anyone seen Lady Gaga's "Paparazzi" music video? She rocks some matte black lipstick at the end that has me jonesing to try it...
16Meh, I'm not ready for goth to be hip, but I'll bet a sheer black gloss over a matte red could look really sexy. I'd try it.
17can't do it..i'm too tan
18I think that look could work in photos and celebrities, but it would be really hard to pull off in real life. I'd have to see it work on other people before I'd try this one.
19My lips are soooooooo black I quit smocking just yesterday. I feel so ugly. I have a pretty face but my lips make me ugly. I don't like when my girlfriend looks me in the face can someone help me please?
