This is a phenomenon I've discussed with a couple of friends, but I want to get your opinion on it. Whenever I dye my hair a drastically different color — going really red, say — I still see myself with my original color in my mind's eye. And when I try to think about myself objectively, to decide whether a color or a certain hairstyle would look good on me, I have a really difficult time picturing myself as I now look, instead of continuing to see myself as I looked before. Does something similar happen to you, or do you make the adjustment smoothly? And have you ever encountered this problem in other areas?

Well, I actually haven't dyed my hair in 8 years, so I'm not too sure about that. However, I have within the past year cut off 13 inches of my hair to donate, and even though it has been 5 months, I STILL wake up in the morning thinking that I've got long hair! I thought it would have worn off by now, but nope!
1I've never dyed my hair, but I can't see myself as anything but a redhead.
2Usually for the first week or so my hair will be foreign to me, but after that it's like it's natural. This past week I dyed my hair really dark- almost looked the original black and couldn't help but think that it looked fake on me. I kept comparing with my family members to see if the coloring was wrong, but I guess it's just me =/.
3i get so excited about my new color that it's impossible for me to forget
4a year and half later, i still feel odd saying i am a brunette after 28 years being blonde (aside from that one very brief brunette phase in college).
5At 40 I decided to dye my hair light brown. I had always been med ash blonde. I never did get used to it (7 years) but did like the change. This summer, wanting something a little more cheery, I compromised and now am a delightful strawberry blonde. That color really suits my skin tones so think I'll keep it.
6When I used to dye my hair it did. Not anymore though
7Whenever I dont do my hair with blond in it, all my friends act differently towards me. Like I'm not me anymore. Then as soon as I get the hightlights back in, they are all like "thank God you're blond again." I definitely like myself better blond but never see myself as dirty blond (my natural) when I'm not..
8I'm prob. in the minority but I am 25 and have NEVER dies my hair! Boring I know. I am on the hunt for a new look - color or otherwise right now. It's well past time I think...
9Im 25 too, brunette and have never dyed my hair and dont see myself doing anything radical for a long time to come.
10I get used to dramatic color change within a week. I really know my mind's made the switch, however, when in my dreams I have my new hair color. That can take months!
11At first yes, over the first few days after dying it, it takes some time to sink in, but I've dyed my hair so many times, in so many colors now that I'm pretty much used to it by that point.
12I'm considering adding some highlights to my hair soon actually but I'm not quite sure which color to go for yet :/
Recently, I dyed my hair from my usual golden blond to dark cherry red(with pink tones no less), and let me tell you that was a big change. I love it but it did take some getting used to. When I'm thinking about myself in some way, I do picture me with the new hair color but it does happen, from time to time, that I picture myself with blond hair again.
13Yep, when I went from honey blonde to dark brunette a few years ago I pictured myself blonde for MONTHS.
I have a friend who I met 8 years ago, and at that time and for a few years after we met she had bright-copper hair, like really vibrant, but she wore it well. Since then she went jet black for a year and then gradually lifted her color to a really pretty blonde, where she's been for two years. But if I think of her, I always picture her bold copper hair, probably always will.
14When I went from brown to blonde I was so self conscience about it that I didn't have this feeling, And when I went to dark black hair I felt it. It was like a new me. I love changing my hair drastically. I cut my hair to my shoulders when it was down to my butt. And, when it was to my chest, I cut it to my chin/ears and shorter. I always feel like a brand new person when I do that. I love the change and I feel it for sure.
