Perms get such a bad rap just because grandmas love them and they were a staple ingredient of '80s hair. Despite the fact that I know how useful they can be, and how many different kinds of perms there are, I might almost be hesitant to tell people if I got one, just for fear that they'd start laughing before I could explain. What's your opinion on the whole thing? Has the perm just gotten too much negative press to make a comeback? Do you even consider it an option? Or are you permed and proud?

I have gotten one in the past but I don't think I will ever get one again.
I was one of those who had a perm in the 80s with big hair. I won't do the same perm now but would get a softer curl perm.
I had some perm beach waves for a while, it was cute.
I got a "body wave" a couple of years back and it was a giant mistake. They used the biggest rollers they had, and they still came out looking like tight curls. I had to hold back tears when they had me leave the salon with wet hair (I'm a baby!)
Anyway, so I hated it. I waited awhile, then got my hair chemically straightened, which my hair didn't take to very well. I'll still have random waves everywhere if I let it air dry. I've learned not to mess with chemicals
No way! My mom hated my straight hair when I was a child and would ocnstantly tell me straight hair is ugly. She started doing "at-home" perm kits on my hair when I was around 7 years old and it burned my scalp, and smelled, and was awful. They never took and my hair would be straight within a day or two but severely damaged.
Who perms their little girl's hair? This was the late 80's and those at home DIY kits were harsh - probably nothing like what you get at a salon today or in today's DIY kits. Still - I could never bring myself to do a perm - I've embraced my stick straight hair.
I had a perm when I was in middle school in early 90's. I had really tight ringlets, and I would not get that again. I could see doing looser curls. My hair is naturally wavy, but a perm would even it out.
I was a competitive dancer when I was younger and I would get a perm 1-2 times a year. Perms help your hair hold styles longer. I stopped getting perms my freshmen year in high school.
Now I'm 25 and I would really like to get another perm. Perm science and practice has come a long way and I know a few people with perms that you'd never know otherwise! My hair is pretty thick, straight on top, wavy underneath. I have to straighten it or dry it with a diffuser every other day. Otherwise it's a mess. I would love to get a perm to even out the textures. It would be so nice to throw some product in my hair and leave!
Sorry, naturally curly, already.
Japanese perms, yes. American-style 80s perms, no thanks.
I have naturally curly hair, but not as much as I would like, so I go about once a year and get a spiral perm, and it always looks amazing, and the curls hold longer because of the natural curls already there, and it also makes it look fuller.
I would definitely go get a perm. my hair is "in the middle" -- not really super curly and not straight. I can't straighten it w/o a flat iron. A perm might give my hair more body @ the roots and so it won't be so flat..
no way. i love my straight, virgin hair.
I have only recently considered getting a perm. I've been planning on permanently dying my hair red (its ashy blonde now, and I'm due for a change) and i think it would look wonderful with a perm. However, i don't really know how perm science has changed. Is it like it was 15 years ago with the frizzy, tough to control do? Or can they actually create 1" ringlets all over my head that will look natural and not 'fro out?? I'd appreciate some more reliable modern perm info if you please
I got perms when I was in middle school. Probably wouldn't do it again, but never say never
Got permed once, but my hair didn't hold it well at all, won't get one again.
I've had my share of perms when I was in high school. The last one didn't really hold, so I stopped trying to force my hair to be curly and I haven't gotten another perm since, that was 10 years ago. I don't plan to start again anytime soon either.
I got my first perm when my hair was still straight when I was about 10. It held for about a year and a half before it grew out, and then my hair was straight until I hit puberty and it curled again on its own.
It's not for me, they remind me of 1990s housewives.
Because of the bad connotations with the word "perm", it's now called "texturizing" which gives the wavy look more than the tight curly aka perm look. I've gotten it and plan to do it again.
No, my hair already curls.
I had one for a whole year when I was ten. I hated it as they had to do the perm process twice as my hair couldn't hold the curl with just one perm process. It fried my hair like nothing else I've ever done with it! Never. Ever. Again.
Makes me think of an ad we have here in New Zealand - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqz9eJiBa_Q
i am waiting for my hair to grow out so i can perm it! ive never done it before
I have naturally curly hair, but as most curly haired people the curl isnt even all over. I use to have a perm when i was younger to make my curls hold, im not sure if would get one now or not. I have straightened my hair for so long that my curls are mixed from tight and loose. Id love to see how i would look with one again, but im worried about the chemical processing.
