When you buy a beauty product, much of your money goes to the costs of marketing and fancy packaging. It's just how it is, which is why I don't go for design alone in most cases. For some items, I don't care about aesthetics — it's not like my eye makeup remover has to be in a stunning bottle. And I don't care as much about eye shadow containers as I do about the product inside. But lipstick — lipstick is different. There's something pleasing about pulling out a well-designed tube, feeling the lipstick swivel up smoothly, and applying it like a sultry dame in a film noir.
So when I want to splurge on a lipstick, I go for either Lancome L'Absolu Rouge ($29) or Chanel Rouge Allure ($30). Both are softly scented, both go on like buttah, and both have packaging that is a pleasure to play with. Lancome's lipstick closes with a gentle magnetic click, and Chanel's sleek case has a cool push-button open/close mechanism. And while technically, these packaging details shouldn't matter, they make lipstick application a lot more fun. Do you have a favorite kind of tube?

my favorite tubes are the ones with high-quality product in them. it could be the ugliest tube in the world, but if i love the product, i don't care.
1I'm a sucker for packaging. I dearly love Mac lippies and their packaging may not be fancy but when you pull it out of your bag, people know it's Mac.
I won't buy a lippe just for the packaging but if it's sexy and I love the lippie.. bonus!
2I have stopped using products because the packaging sucks.
The old school Stila lipsticks, in the silver cardboard tube. Great lipstick, but a few weeks in my purse, the tube looked like a tampon that escaped its applicator. No thank you.
3i've probably bought 3 tubes of lipstick in my life so far and it was based on color alone. i am, however, a lip balm junkie and tend to buy ones with nicer packaging as long as they come with a few good reviews. thankfully, i've never been too disappointed in this method. my favorite pretties are korres lip butter and burt's bees lip tins. if there were 2 equal quality products i wouldn't mind spending slightly more for the nice wrapping.
4I don't care about the packaging of lip glosses. (I don't wear lipstick.) They just get beat up in my purse, so why bother?
5Hehe. pretty packaging gets me every time. I mean, looking at those Anna Sui tubes!!
6leslievanhouten, I so agree. I like Stila lipsticks, but those cardboard tubes looked very tampon-y after a while.
7I love the Maybelline lipstick tubes. (Yep, I'm a Maybelline junkie) Pretty much because they stand out in the sea of black that is my makeup bag. All my pencils, tools and pallets are black so its nice to not have to upend my bag when I'm after some colour!
I also like Wonderfull packaging, their lipglosses are smooth and kinda streamlined. They looks awesome.
8I admit, I'm a sucker for good design, and lipsticks especially! I'm also a fan of Rouge Allure, it's packaging is just so, well, alluring!
Rouge Interdit from Givenchy also has a great tube, but it always opens in my bag, and that's definitely a minus.
9i usually don't care as long as the prouduct itself is good, but if there is like a gift set in adorable packaging then i would proabably get it... for myself!
10I have to admit that lipstick is one of the only products I buy that I care about the packaging. A pretty tube goes a long way.
11I love the YSL lipstick cases--gold and gently springloaded--but, I got the Bohemian Rose Aqualumiere, which is a great sheer summer color, but too soft for the case in summer. Oh well....
12I have to admit, there is something about pulling a pretty lipstick case out of your handbag showing that it is a high quality lippie that I spent my hard earned money on, and that this is one of my 'treats' - my slippery slope is the Christian Dior counter, and the lipstick tubes are so well known - everywhere! Fun article!
13It bugs me when the case of the lipstick gets loose, so a magnetic click actually would be helpful.
People can't lie & say that they aren't drawn in to products for aesthetic reasons. I mean it might not be the ONLY thing that will make them like a product but how something is packaged is also imporant when it comes to appeal.
Chances are if something looks good, people will like it & want to buy it.
14oops I meant IMPORTANT.
15I like a very sleek look to my lipsticks - stuff in all black like MAC or Bobbi Brown or Nars is good; but my latest aspirational lipstick that I really really want, and which really takes the cake in this category, is the G de Guerlain lipsticks... they're so BEAUTIFUL!
16Aesthetically pleasing packaging is what catches your eye first - then it is up to the actual product to perform well or not. If it doesn't - we move on to the next beautiful look until we find the right product for each one of us. Stats say that 73% of women purchase cosmetics by their packaging and the reputation of the brand. (Just doing my job)..... Fun article.
