The long march to Halloween has begun, because dubious costume wigs are popping up on a ton of shopping sites. While looking in Drugstore.com's Halloween section, I was taken aback by this BuySeasons Ho Wig ($20). I don't like the term in general, I had no idea that fluffy black hair and red lipstick were such a crime, and I really never imagined that a marketer could look at a piece of fake hair and think "Hey, that's a wig for somebody who wants to broadcast to everyone that they're a marginalized, dehumanized figure for Halloween. She wants to be dismissed, essentialized, and treated horribly — Ho wig! Women will love it!"
What do you think? Am I overreacting, or was this thing in extremely poor taste?

Bottega Veneta
the wig itself isn't that ho-ish but it could be paired with the outfit/makeup shown or some other ho ensemble..for those who find it offensive, it's halloween, lighten up!
1Well, Halloween is a time for most women to dress in poor taste anyway. Most costumes for women are tight, showing way too much cleavage and too short. Halloween is the acceptable time for most women to dress "ho-ish". This wig fits right in.
2it's not a funny joke, but i don't think it's worth getting upset over... besides, if it were really a "ho wig" it would be made of aubrey o'day's hair hahaha
3The funny thing is that my hair looks exactly the same! Only bright red!
4But yeah, it's just hair, who cares what it's labeled.
Geeze Bella...taking this a bit too seriously are we? They do pimp colors and hats and what not. Certain combos do broadcast a certain image, whether it's deserved or not.
5if anybody is seriously offended by this, they need to lighten up. a lot.
6That's MY hair... black and all! I would've expected "Ho Wig" to be more "trailer parkish"... like a blonde wig with three inches of roots and all matted and stuff. I'm not offended, but it made me laugh!
7It's offensive. It won't keep me up at night, but it's another example of misogyny. Why not just call it a brunette wig and let the wearer decide what look it's appropriate for?
Another Halloween wig that I hate is the cave woman wig that's an afro. How ironic considering cave people were European.
8It IS ignorant. Considering many women have hair similar to that :S Myself included. It's completely ignorant. Since when having thick full black hair Ho Hair? Last time I checked, many ethnicities naturally have black thick hair. Personally, I am not impressed.
9Yeah, it is misogynistic. But moreover, why in the f*** do women dress like day shift hookers on Halloween? FFS, people! It's HALLOWEEN, It's supposed to be scary!
10It's sad but I know that what the manufacturer was probably thinking was any woman looking for a slutty or wh*re-ish outfit would love to add a "ho-wig" to her ensemble.
What I don't get is why women use Halloween as an excuse to be able to dress so inappropriately. If women weren't so bent on dressing so tastelessly, the manufacture probably would have called it a black wig instead. Maybe the women are living out secret wishes to be able to dress like a slut?
11Misogynistic, yes. That wig doesn't represent anyone from the show, "The Hills".
12it was probably right next to the "Pimp" costume. The Pimp & Ho are very popular. It's really not a big deal, it's Halloween. As far as the actual style is concerned though, I don't find it very ho like. It just looks like bed hair.
13Guess I'm a ho too then!
14How in the world is this wig ho-ish....LOL
And no, this does not offend me in the slightest.
15The name is offensive to any actual ho's out there. They should issue an apology. (lol) I'm not losing any sleep over it but they could have used another name. What about "long black wig".
16I guess naming it the "Ho" wig was a little less offensive than calling it the "Megan Fox" wig.
17OMgoodness every second of every day someone's little feeling are getting hurt. Grow up, lighten up and learn to laugh.. When did everyone become such a sissy? It's getting rather old. Why don't you ask a "HO" if she's insulted?
18I don't think it's offensive.. but I also don't think a certain hair style makes a ho.
In the last 20 years the lines between what prostitutes wear and what counts as appropriate attire have been completely blurred anyway.
19I see people like this everyday! I'm sure some of them are ho's.
20It made me laugh. It's the sort of thing my friends and I laugh about, there are just certain things that are representative of certain stereotypes. I do subscribe to stereotypes sometimes, but I know when it is appropriate and when it is not to express my thoughts.
21I do think it's offensive, but also, given the current state of Halloween and the target demographic, "women will love it," is not entirely un-apt. The only creative costume I saw on the Lower East Side last year was Ms. Pacman, otherwise I saw a lot of costumes that have more offensive names, or sexually suggestive labels and such on the costume.
