The other weekend, GiggleSugar and I went to Nordstrom. Even though the last thing I need is another nail polish, I dropped a ridiculous $19 on Chanel Gold Shimmer. Yep, I got suckered in by the sleek black cap and double-C logo. (And of course, the pedicure has already chipped.) How often does packaging make or break a decision?

On a related note, I think the MAC makeup container recycling program should be standard in the industry. It is environmentally irresponsible to create non-recyclable containers and excess packaging, and I wish more brands would follow MAC's lead.
merchandising is everything. I think the best thing I ever did was realize that, and try to keep it in mind when I shop. but sometimes I still enjoy the pretty package and I buy it anyway.
I don't judge you at all bella! It's the same reason I've purchased NARS eyeshadow
for $31. can you believe that? In sephora, all the colors are so pretty and stand out next to each other. then I get it home, and a few days later i'm thinking "i bought purple glitter shadow
for $31. OMG."
We all know that packaging adds up to the cost of the product. Pakaging sometimes can add "attraction" to a product because most costumers or the market tend to look at products w/ nice packaging as "better" than the ones which package is too simple or unattractive . Sometoimes, we don't know we are lured by this. But oftentimes, we learn that not all "great things" come from beautiful packages. If we know that the product works, we buy it and come back to buy it again.
i love [packaging
maybe we need a sounding board for this. whenever we go out and buy something beautiful but ridiculously priced, we can come here and get validation from our fellow packaging lovers.
We will say stuff like "it's okay sweetie. I know you've already ruined it and can't
take it back. just enjoy it. and try to resist the NARS next time." (virtual pat on back)
I love product packaging. While I'll buy a great product with an ugly package design, I'm also much more likely to try a new product if it is presented well. That goes for beauty products, food, wine, pretty much anything. Some of my beauty product packaging faves are: Stila (adorable), MAC (sleek), Chanel (classic), Too Faced (sexy in a fun sorta way) and Urban Decay (hip).
Okay I should mention I bought some perfume from Victoria's Secret last night. I discovered at home that when you open the box, it whistles at you. (some kind of light activated sound maker thing) I thought it was cute. but wouldn't have made me buy it. now i feel guilty about tossing the box. i mean come on, it whistles at you!
Way too cool. I love flowery scents. Love to win it!!!
This is what the marketer's are paid to do. They make products that lure us in so that we buy them. Perfume bottles are definitely one of them. If a product comes in crappy packaging, it's definitely a turn off to me.
KrisSugar: I have the same perfume!! I bought it because it smelled nice not because it purrred at me. I got so sick of hearing that puurrr that I taped down the little button on the bottom of the bottle so it can't purr anymore. muah ha ha ha ha
Crappy packaging doesn't turn me off, especially if I'm looking for a specific item, but looking at shiny packaging when I'm having a bad day makes me think "oooooh, I need this..." And then I get home and have the same reaction as KrisSugar: "i bought purple glitter shadow for $31. OMG."
I'm a fool for good packaging and marketing. What's inside matters but i'm a sucker for a sexy bottle.
marketers see me coming from a mile away!!!!!!!!!! I don;t mean to but i buy the pretty stuff each time
it's definitely all about the packaging. if consumers didn't care much about it, so many retailers out there wouldn't even exist right now
I'm not picky about packaging, but if something is too pink I won't buy it.
If I'm not too familiar with a product, crappy package will keep me away from it no matter the price. I'm definitely more likely to buy something pretty and unique.
I LOVE nice packaging.
I'm in law school to become a trademark/copyright attorney, and i know that company's can get trademark AND copyright protection for creating beautiful, unique packaging. seeing a great package makes me want to buy an item because I know people have worked so hard to create something new and eye-catching!
I totally agree with jillsugar about MAC's recycling program. I don't use a ton of MAC products but I have a little baggie in my closet to save up my empty lash boxes and brush cleaners. Now if only Chanel would start a program I would really be maing a difference!
KrisSugar...why don't you try and return it? Tell them you got a reaction from it...makeup companies hate that and they'll refund your money right away too!
i'm embarassed to say that great packaging always works its way into my eyes. i don't really use dior makeup, but i have a ton because i get those cute mirrors and lip gloss bracelets!
I like shiny or pretty things. Lol, but simple chic packaging draws me in too. The thing that gets me the most is the Free Gift With Purchase though ::::ashamed::::
I used to be easily sucker in by pretty packaging. I am happy to say that I no longer am
i am a sucker for packaging one time i went to sephora and saw this mascara that has cool designs and i coughed up 45 bucks on one mascara!
it was worth it cuz it made my lashes longer!
Packaging helps but i don't think it's that serious.
More important than nice packaging is functional packaging for me. For instance, I love Stila's eye shadow pans, and I admire the effort to be less wasteful on the part of the company, but....for $16 I REALLY want a container for my eyeshadow and it's kind of galling that they make us buy the containers separately. It makes me feel ripped off.
On the other hand, the UGLIEST package I have seen (L'Oreal's Lash Out mascara) happens to house one of my favorite products!!
I fell for the package once. I had a Chanel compact that had the whole "double C" thing going on, too, and it gave me a little thrill to whip it out in the powder room at fancy restaurants, LOL. But the powder was USELESS! It had so much perfume in it that I got a rash when I used it!
I can attest that the dazzling packaging of that gold polish had us drooling. Too bad chippage happened so soon. I can never get metallic polishes to look good, honestly...
I think there's actually a critical difference here between "branding" and "packaging." Both are absolutely important (and I fall for both), but in this case, it was the brand that lured you in.
It matters alittle bit.
It matters some but I won't just by a product b/c it looks good on the outside.
YEs I judge a product by its package.... lol
I don't think it matters too much. Cute packaging is always a plus though.
I don't think it matters too much
Packaging is VERY important to me. But then again, I like really pretty stuff. No matter what it is.
it's not important to me most of the time...except sometimes it get's to me and then i HAVE to get that product!
I seriously won't spend that much money on nail polish ... my favorites are by Sally Hansen and Maybelline ... $3-4, woot! I won't splurge on most products just because of packaging or brand - the packaging must be pretty bad for me to pass it up. That said ... I do tend to stay away from VERY cheap stuff - especially from Dollar Stores.
Oh, I have a real soft spot for good packaging. I don't always go for it if the price is ridiculously more than a comparable product, but I'm definitely drawn to items by their packaging.
I wouldn't buy something in totally ugly packaging, but I wouldn't buy something just for pretty packaging either.
somewhat, but not a deciding factor.
It matters a little. I'm a sucker for cute packaging, but if I like a product, but the packaging is ugly/bad, i won't stop using it.
I think it also varies by product. Like for example, would you ever buy a perfume with an ugly bottle? It's something that's always prominently on my vanity table, and it almost feels like the bottle reflects the scent. Then again one of my favorite products (a liquid blush) comes in a very blah bottle, and I keep buying it because I know it works.
The stingy part of me always thinks "there's no point spending so much money on a product when it just puts more of the money into useless packaging", but the superficial part of me thrills at the sleekness and prettiness of good packaging. I get sucked in by packaging all the time, even though my head screams against it. I LOVE Stila packaging, or even the simplicity of Giorgio Armani and Bobbi Brown (the most gorgeous palettes, anyone?). Tangentially, Bella, that shade looks hot! It amazes me that Chanel would make ANYTHING that isn't top quality. =(
Packaging is very important to me, but the brand is the most important, i never buy an unknown brand makeup product just because of a beautiful cute packaging.
It doesnt matter how packing looks like, the color is only matter.
Less is more when it comes to packaging to me. The less garbage I have the better.
And would you like someone who wasn't fancy packaged on the outside but was stellar content? YES!!!
