No matter your age, I'm sure you remember the first time you spotted a gray hair on your head. For me, I was 24. A random occurrence, I thought, although my dad was pretty much completely silver-haired by his late twenties, so I couldn't be too sure. The majority of you said you have already found your first gray hair, and since my initial unearthing, I've detected several more "natural highlights," as my hairdresser likes to say. But would it be so bad to be a young gray-haired lady, after all? Vogue writer Sarah Harris doesn't think so, recalling her early discovery of gray strands as a teenager.
"I was 16 and mortified," Harris tells The Times. By her twenties, she truly started to embrace her light locks, saying, "I slowly grew fond of the way my silver flickered when it caught the light." While she realizes that she's lucky to have a soft, silken texture to her hair, Harris acknowledges it's a lot of work. "Gray hair, unless styled and conditioned, can look washed-out and neglected. Grooming is crucial," she says. Therefore, she spends more time on her strands, protecting her hair from the sunlight to reduce yellowing, all while investing in good shampoos specifically designed for silver tones. To find out why she'll probably stay with the gray for a while, just keep reading.
While she admits that she might eventually have a change of heart regarding her silver-toned hair, but for now, she appreciates the authentic look it gives her, and lots of people seem to admire it. "More than anything, though, I love the rebelliousness of my hair – it’s honest and nonconformist," she says. What do you have to say on the subject? If you're going gray and sticking with it, you're in good company. Even if you're not gray just yet, are you all for staying natural, or is that something only time will tell?

I think she looks fabulous! personally this look is not for me, though I have had gray hairs since my teens, and my mother's dyed her hair since her early 30s. I'm in store for it as well, I fear.
1This is something I'll definitely be dealing with soon. I have some grey hairs, but they're mostly hidden. It will definitely become more noticable over time, and I guess at some point I'll need to either come to terms with it or start dying my hair (haven't done that since college time). For now, I'll just be in denial until I'm forced to deal with it.
2I have white hair coming in although since I currently dye my hair, you only see it when the roots grow out. My mom has been completely white since she was in her early 30's although she has always dyed over it.
I would totally stop dying my hair and rock the white hair once I have enough of it.
3I don't think I could ever go grey because my greys are only popping up in the middle section of my hair so I would look like Elvira! LOL. I got my first few greys around 20 and I just plucked them and now I am 31 and needing to color my hair every 3 to 4 weeks.
4I've had gray hair since I was 14, both of my parents went gray early, and from what I hear, it is hereditary. I am HEAVY gray on the top of my head, and having naturally dark brown hair, I choose to color my hair. My husband has told me that I should just go natural, but the biggest problem with that is growing out the roots, and I am afraid of looking older than my age since I am only 30. I do agree that gray hair is a pain in the pa-toot to maintain, as my non gray hair is wavy and coarse, and my gray hair is mostly straight, with more kinky waves toward the ends. When I air dry my hair it looks like a lion's mane, but once I hit it with the heat, it's smooth and shiny and easy to work with.
5she looks great
i would totally love to have grey/white hair
the ONLY issue is... if it starts growing grey/white at the roots, but the ends are still dark... how do you transition?
6Elvira never had grey hair. Lily Munster did!
7I'll be dyiing my hair (this wednesday!), so I'll opt for covering up some grays, though there's really not much at the moment. Sometime eventually, I'll just go natural with gray, but I do like to switch it up big time, so who knows?
8Grey hair is great, but mine is not the same texture as the rest of my hair (just like mgiorgi420). My greys (which I've been getting since my mid teens) are wiry and don't respond as well as the rest of my dark hair to flat ironing or curling. The color is beautiful, but it's like they have a mind of their own!
I henna with Lush's Caca when I want to disguise them, and the color just fades off on its own.
9I spotted - well the hair stylist spotted - my first gray when I was at the tender age of like eight or seven - I really don't remember, but I was definitely under 10. It was embarrassing. It must be genetics, cause my little sister had her first gray in elementary school as well. I'm now in my twenties, and I probably have 10 strands or so of gray hair, but they're hidden, so I don't have to dye them yet.
10I love hearing that other people found their first grey in their teens, makes me feel not so freaky
I dye me hair every 6 weeks to cover them up. Completely hereditary in my family (thanks, Dad).
I love that Sarah is embracing the grey - I don't have the courage to, but I admire her for doing so.
11i always thought i would be grey by now, at least that was what my mom told me! i was born w/very red hair, but it's just gotten darker over time, now its dark aburn. i think natural is the best look
12There is no reason for any woman to be grey ever! Thankfully, knock wood, I don't have any greys, and I'm 34. I get it from my Grandma who is in her early 80's and has very few grey hairs. But if I did get them, I'd be buying boxes of hair color so freaking fast! No matter what, grey hair makes you look older and nobody wants to look older!!!
13I AGREE IT'S A PERSONAL CHOICE...FOR ME NO...TOO WASHED OUT LOOKING, AND SINCE I RARELY WEAR MAKEUP IT WOULDN'T BE A GOOD LOOK...
14Sarah looks great going gray but it's not for me. I spotted my first grays in my early 20s but it wasn't an issue for me until I hit 40, I've been coloring my hair since then.
15TammyO thank you! That is who I meant!
16I love my mom's gray hair, though she definitely has to take special care of it. Her hair looks fabulous.
I'm a redhead, so I'll probably get the sandy color to white instead of silver. I haven't ever found a gray hair, I'm 22.
17I'm 23, 24 in 3 days and I am about 15% gray already. I dye my hair (I have naturally black hair) but I feel that in a few years I am going to go natural. I have a long life ahead of me hopefully and I can't imagine dying my hair for years and years.
