This week's Bella Donna is one of the biggest stars of '70s cinema, Pam Grier. Her career began in blaxploitation films such as Foxy Brown and Jackie Brown; these days, she plays Kit on The L Word.
Grier's career started shortly after the rise of the Black is Beautiful movement, which paralleled the civil rights movement by encouraging African-Americans to celebrate their features. The Afro hairstyle was iconic throughout the '70s, but it was usually associated with the activist movement alone. But when Grier wore hers, the Afro was part of a sex-symbol look. I think the reason I like Pam Grier so much is that her characters are strong and smart. She plays *women* rather than girls, but along the lines of Buffy, gives you a reason to root for her. But don't get me started on Buffy; I could talk for HOURS.
10Yes afros are strong and sexy, I saw a girl with one a few weeks ago at a block party and she was the fiercest chick out there, she stood out and looked so cool and sexy. I loved it.
