What could you do without for 40 days and 40 nights? Not food, not sleep. Give up sex? Maybe. The question is, could you do what Nicky Taylor did? The 42-year-old woman (no relation to the '90s megamodel) went for that long with no cosmetics or toiletries. That means no shampoo, no toothpaste, no deodorant, no makeup—and no showering, either.
Taylor, a documentary filmmaker, was used to spending £2,000 (around $4,000) per year on beauty products. Disgusted by her high levels of consumption and concerned about the number of chemicals that were going on her skin, she decided to try an experiment: For 40 days, she'd throw her grooming routine out the window. She explains:
"I always think I look absolutely terrible if I haven't washed my hair that morning, when the reality is that other people don't really notice at all," she says. "The idea that we need all these products and that we have to be clean at all times is endemic in society, and I wanted to see what happened when I stopped washing altogether. Would I lose all my friends? Would I stink to high heaven? Or would life just carry on as normal?

Right away: To protect the health of her children, she wore latex gloves when preparing their food. And at first, the lack of primping freed up time for her to sleep in. But then...
Day 4: Taylor begins to stink, and her hair is greasy. "Within a few days it turned into a bird's nest and instead of allowing it to fall flatteringly around my face, I'd taken to pulling it all back into a ponytail," she said.
Week 2: Taylor's children refuse to hug her because of the stench. Surprisingly, though, she isn't treated abnormally at a work event.
Week 3: "My toenails were turning a strange color and I'd developed dry, peeling skin on my hands."
Week 4: Taylor's skin developed a healthy glow, and a cyst near her eye disappeared. On the other hand, a dentist told her that she could lose her teeth if she kept up this non-routine.
Week 5:"My hair was so greasy that it stayed in its ponytail position even when the hair band wasn't there. And my teeth were horribly discoloured and covered in a build-up of plaque."
Week 6: Although she had 5,000 times the bacteria she did before embarking on this experiment, none of the bacteria were dangerous. She did, however, have a cavity. Overall, while Taylor was glad to be able to shower, she believes that most people don't notice your grooming as much as you think they do.
What do you think? Personally, I'm not about to give up showering anytime soon, but I see what she's getting at. I used to wash my hair every day, but now I wash it every other day or so. Nobody seems to be able to tell, and my hair is healthier and less dry than it used to be. Still, you won't catch me going without a good tooth-brushing anytime soon.

1I could neve give up that much lol.
I thought 2 days without a shower was pushing it lol
It takes a lot fo guts to pull that off being a women!
That's, uh, beyond nasty. I understand taking a step back and cutting back on your beauty products (I have done that myself and am amazed at how much I didn't need)...but no soap? That's just unsanitary.
2i think she has a bird's-nest-hair even when she's all dolled up (the left picture, right?), she actually looks better in the right photo than the left one.
3I can't fathom not washing your hands after you pee. I think her experiment would have been more interesting if she had cut down to one shower a week or something. It's pretty predictable that you're going to reek if you don't shower for 40 DAYS!!!
4though she was treated normally at the work event, i'm sure the ppl noticed. they just didn't want to be mean. for instance, i know a girl who is against deodorant for moral reasons or spiritual reasons (i can't elaborate b/c i never understood why she didn't use it. she might not have bathed either. i'm not sure) and she smelled but we didn't treat her differently b/c that's very juvenile. however, ppl noticed and talked about it (not to joke about it, just to figure out why she smelled) and when we knew the reason, we didn't think about it again. i would never ever do that though
5stinky pits is one thing, but stinky bottom is another
6That is an interesting experiment (just glad I didn't perform it!)
7i love my showers. but i do share some of the same concerns about rampant consumerism and a dread of piles of unused beauty products. i recently went through and edited my products both for use and to rid myself of excessive chemicals, opting for more natural ingredients.
8I could never go through with this!!!
9ew! i mean, i sometimes skip a shower, not on purpose, but if i am home all day ont he weekend, i may jus tnot take on one day, and i feel so grungy when i wake up the next day i have to! I cannot IMAGINE how stinky that was...and can you imagine having your period and then not showering?
10I think its great that she cut back on her products. But to not wash hands after using the toilet at work? If one of my coworkers did that I would be disgusted. I am not a germ-phobe, I just wash my hands after using the toilet, and shower.
11Forget about the stench of her pits and her sticky haird what about her va-jay-jay??!! No wonder people didn't seem to notice...they were too busy looking for a clean whiff of air.
12Switch to organic products and conserve your excess but pleases bathe!
I would give up the make-up and perfume but not the shower.
13That is disgusting. I would much rather put all those chemicals on my body then get a cavity in such a short time. Plus imagine how easily you could get sick if you aren't washing your hands, thats also putting the people around you in danger of getting sick.
14wow thats crazy. i cant even go two days without showering.
15I can't go 1 day without a shower.
16That's really interesting that she got a cavity after 6 weeks. Not that I'm surprised, with 6 weeks of no brushing.
17The two inventions that cut the death rate of humans in half are the toilet seat and soap. I can see cutting back or doing without cosmetics or even deodorant, but not washing your hands? There is no way that all of the bacteria on her body at the end of 6 weeks was "harmless."
18Oh man that is hardcore! Couldn't do it.
19i can understand going without deodrant or shampoo for 6 weeks for an experiment( when someone else is doing it) but no soap is just wrong like u can wash a lot with soap lol. and what did she get out of this, a big dentist bill?
20that is just gross. not washing hands especially after using the toilet is disgusting. i probably wash my hands 20-30 times a day (after the bathroom, after handling papers from the guys at work b/c you never know where they have been, before cooking, during cooking and after cooking) i just dont think i could do this.
21this kind of makes me want to vomit haha. and now brushing your teeth for that long or whiping your bottom, gross!!!
22squelching consumerist impulses is one thing - but eschewing basic hygiene? puhleez
23Wow...but honestly I don't really smell if I go more than a few days withouts howering.
24Ugh. I cant even imagine what her....nevermind.....
25I could NOT do this.... I dont know how she did it?!
26I guess her body learned to adapt and started producing all those "good" bacteria, but still. I do think that many people do not notice your grooming/makeup as much as you think, but to not wash your hands or body or teeth for that amount of time? I wouldn't and can't do it. Even a little water without soap is better than that.
27gross. that is all I can think right now. gross. gross. gross.
28Wow I couldn't do it!
29Seriously. Did she not even rinse off? Did she not itch? Did she not feel sick every time she had to swallow all of the bacteria from her teeth when she ate? How could she not clean her hoo-hah! I'm totally grossed out.
30Frankly, she's wrong about people not noticing. Have you ever been to Italy? I lived in Rome, and the hot summer days stuck on the Metro with the smelly men were some of the most miserable in my life. The thing is others do notice when you don't shower or brush your teeth. We're just too polite to say anything.
31Wow. I've been wondering lately what might happen if I didn't clean myself regularly. Some brave soul took the guesswork out for me. Hopefully now that she's clean she'll never have to try that experiment again!
32I don't really see a point to that whole experiment...
33i just could NOT do this....to me, cleanliness is second to Godliness, so yeah, i love to be CLEAN!
34I've never heard of this experiment, and I bet she'll never do it again.
35This is disgusting! She could have dangered her children with the bacteria from her dirtiness, and she also put herself at risk.
36i could NEVER do this. especially not the teeth part...i HAVE to brush my teeth twice a day.
37Gross. Cutting back on unnecessary products makes a lot of sense, but not brushing your teeth or washing your hands after going to the bathroom? That's just unhealthy. What was the point of going to that extreme?
38Damn! Why does it have to be so extreme?? If you think you are spending too much then freakin cut back!! Not showering or brushing your teeth for 6 weeks is ridiculous. She could have proven her point by merely leaving out her beauty routine. I wouldn't have hugged her ass either.
39I don't think I could do this but that was a great idea to do.
40I could go a week with out washing my HAIR... But everything else? Gotta do it DAILY.
41Something "STINKS!" and the wind is blowing from her direction!!!
42ummm...yuck!!! Perhaps the one thing she learned is that whatever she's putting on her face is clogging her pores...hence the newly realized healthy glow and disappearance of cyst...but weeks without a shower or brushing her teeth or washing and combing ones hair...YUCK!!!
43I agree with several other posts.
Maybe she should have still showered daily and cut her hair washing to twice a week. And cut back on the makeup, perfume and treatments.
Brushing your teeth is part of being healthy and not part of the beauty side of things.. so to drop that Imo was daft.
44EWE! I would never not wash, brush my teeth or take care of myself. If she thinks people don't notice, she's crazy! I notice when people aren't clean and it's gross. Take care of yourself!
45I could see giving up makeup for that long, but toothpaste and a good bath? That's kind of gross, but I'd watch the documentary it's really interesting.
46bleh! eww! i think id be in awe if she gave up things like just cosmetics or hair products etc. but no showers? no toothpaste? omg can you imagine how gross her bedsheets must have gotten??
47ok, so the experiment was a litle gross...BUT i would like to know what about not washing for so long helped her face so much?!?! was it the minerals in everyday dirt?!?
48i try to not wash my hair everyday, but it can get really gross. i know that bumble and bumble make hair powder to help, and i know of some "dry shampoos". but the truth is i dont know which to use...
any suggestions?
did anybody actually find out why she decided to do this experiment?
49Homegirl got a cavity from not brushing her teeth after all that time. No way in HELL!!
I'm going to brush my teeth just after reading that. I have teeth issues, I could never do that. And it's not true, people notice they just don't say anything I hate being around people who think brushing their teeth daily is optional. IT'S NOT OPTIONAL!!! You have to do it. Everyday, after every meal.
Interesting documentary though.
