Looking back at the Teen Choice Awards, I was surprised to see a trio of black-nailed ladies. Lauren Conrad, Avril Lavigne and Sophia Bush all sported this shade, which I think should be saved for fall and winter—lighten up, ladies! And considering last fall's run on Chanel's Black Satin polish, I'm surprised that this trend is staying around. But if you're going to go dark, here are a few inexpensive choices.

Zoya Nail Polish in Raven ($6) is the perfect long-wearing creamy looking black shade that you've been searching for. For a trendy "It Girl" look, shape nails so that they are short and square. On long nails, black can be a little too Elvira.

It doesn't get anymore basic than OPI Nail Lacquer in Black Onyx ($7.50). This true black is from one of my favorite chip-resistant and long-wearing brands; OPI's polish stays shiny for up to ten days!
Duri Cosmetics Nail Enamel in Black Caviar ($5) is a jet black shade with a hint of dark purple iridescent sparkle for a little added oomph. If you like a little nuance with your color, go for this one, which feels a little more special than matte black shades.

OPI has a shade called Linkin Park After Dark that's a nice dark dark purple that almost looks black. I love it and wear it in the fall. Summer is for the brights in my opinion.
1Thanks nikki I was looking for a dark puple, i have a dark blue shade I use and I love.
2I still don't understand the trend of black nail polish.
I thought it was over when the whole grunge/goth trash thing ended, circa 1995.
Yuck. Black nail polish is gross, I don't care what 'famous' person is wearing it.
3I'm not a fan of blak black nails, but I do like the "darker" colours.
4Like dark deep purple and dark blue and deep green...I think those are all nice if worn at the appropriat time.
I'm not a fan of the black but I like darker reds and plums.
5I tried wearing black nail polish, but it just made me feel like I was back in my high school goth phase.
A dark purple could be really lovely though.
6I think it looks good if done right! It looks tacky on longer nails and doesn't really go with some skin tones either.
7i love black nail polish!! i kept it off in the summer cause i wanted to go with lighter tones but my Chanel black satin will be back on in the next month or so =)
8I love O.P.I's new Russian line. They have a dark blue that I bought called Russian Navy (maybe)? I LOVE IT!
9The Russian line does have a few good darker colors in it. I have ALWAYS loved black nail polish because it matches 90% of what I wear.. black! I almost hated to see it get so trendy but it was nice not to have to search high and low for it anymore.
10I never really understood the trend for black nail polish. It doesn't look good to me.
11I LOVE the OPI Russian line. I've actually been wearing black nail polish on and off since Halloween, just because I loved it so much. Now that I have my acrylics off and keep my nails natural and short, the dark polish looks great!
I'm excited to switch to the dark, dark purple in the OPI Russian line!
12last time i wore black polish was back in high school. that was AGES ago.
13sally beauty supply has THE BEST cheeeeeap black nail polish.
14it's 99 cents. it lasts for days. i was amazed b/c i'm always trying diff nailpolishes to see which one lasts.
I hate this trend, I love dark plums and wine colors instead.
15I am not a fan of the dark nail...but I do love Sophia!
16Maybe I'm not that cool, but I really don't like black nail polish. I used to wear it when I was little at Halloween, and that's not my idea of glamorous! I do like the deep, dark plums and reds though.
17I've always loved black nail polish and I've been using it every now and then for years!
18Yay! I still have a good bottle of OPI's lincoln park after dark left over from last season. I haven't bought any of the true black shades yet but may break down and get Chanel's. It was sold out all the time last year.
19Golly I could go without seeing these three ever again! I really can't stand LC or Avril. With that said, I do like the darker nail polish though!
20I vant to suck on your fingernails...ha ha ha ha
21This trend was so over in the 90s. It doesn't look any better now. A dark plum or red would be more flattering.
22I like dark nails, they somehow go with everything.
My faves:
Lincoln Park After Dark (OPI, dark purple)
A Man in EVery Portuguese (OPI, dark blood maroon)
Nail Noir (Creative Nail Design, dark, dark purple-maroon)
Honestly, they all look pretty much the same!
23Actually if I see anymore "nude" nail polishes, french manicures, or pastel shades, I'm going to puke black nail polish all over it. I hate the rainbow colored polishes. That is the bad part of the 80's. Why don't we just bring neon back too and try to match our eyeshadow to it as well? I say LONG LIVE GOTH or any other type of style or genre people feel that dark polish is associated with. I'm so over the "summer trends". Well, I'm done b*tching out.
24i like this..i gotta buy some black i guess..
25I love wearing black nail polish.
26Just with my pale skin and dark brown hair, i always look like a goth!
So might have to switch to a deeper red :[
But the best black nail polish ive found is 'Sally Hansen Black Out' it really doesnt chip.
i almost never wear fingernail polish, but sometimes black fingernails still rock. that said mine ALWAYS chips. I don't care what brand it is.
By the by, the Zoya brand is also natural & free of formaldehyde and other toxic chems, so that gets a thumbs-up from me!
27I love black nail polish, it goes with absolutely everything and if done right can look amazing. I wear this on a day to day basis and I think it can look amazing when I'm suited and booted to wearing pretty feminine dresses. I think its a must that your nails are short and square to pull this off without looking like a goth, I'm tanned so thankfully don't have that problem!!
