In May, I decided to buy a package of laser hair removal treatments. It was time for me to get my body bikini-ready for Memorial Day and I figured that would give me ample time. I went in raring to go, but my goodness—the pain of laser removal is just unbearable! During every treatment I whimpered and vowed that I would never return, but because of all the money I spent on the package and because I wanted results, I continued to go back again every week and endure more torture.
At least my numbing remedies would vary. One week it was a couple shots of Jack Daniels, another week I actually tried rubbing the JD on my body to numb it, but nothing seemed to work. A friend recommended a product to me called Topicaine. What this does is numb your skin if you put it on an hour before your treatment.
I've never been more excited to run to the drugstore. I thought this was the product to save the day... until I got so Topicaine happy that after I applied it to my upper lip, by accident, I licked my lips!
The second I did it, I knew the error of my ways. Everything went tingly...and then it went numb. I couldn't feel my tongue, then my throat. I showed up to my appointment slurring my words (as if I just had Novocaine), but at least I was confident that this treatment would be pain free.
What a disappointment. The cream didn't numb the pain at all. Somehow, it actually felt worse. As I lay there with a numb mouth, all I could think about was Jack Daniels. I only went to one more appointment but I'd say I have about a 75% reduction of hair. No biggie, the remainder is nothing my Schick Quattro can't handle.

You poor thing!
1I would never get lasered. It's either a razor or depilatory for me. No waxing, either!
2oh man that sounds like it hurts! sorry about that...hope the 75% less hair is a small consolation.
3oh bella! how you regale us with these cute little stories!
although, i'm sorry to hear that your laser hair removal didn't work
at least now i know...
4OMG that all sounds so painful.
5Bella, I get laser sessions. It is not supposed to hurt that much! I have the highest setting and I can tolerate it ok. Tell them to give you icepacks! Do they put cold gel on the area before they laser it?
6I had laser hair removal a couple of years ago, and the more the sessions went on, the more painful it was! I did my underarms and bikini line, I have had hardly any regrowth on my bikini line, but it didn't do a whole lot for my underarms (and I had 7 sessions)
7I think I might try again on my underarms...but I feel your pain! I actually grabbed the technicians arm at one point, but then apologized and she said that she has been kicked and punched before, so it wasn't a big deal!
Oh, it also depends on how thick and how much hair you have as to how painful it might be (I have really thick hair, boo), at least that's what the technician told me.
8Oh, Bella! lol...I laugh not at you, but with you, because I could see myself doing the same thing and licking my lips after I put numbing cream on!
9Aww, that sucks! But a really funny story nonetheless!! The JD pre-remedy really made me laugh too.
10I'm currently doing laser treatment on my bikini too. It HURTS but I just want to get it over with. I was super excited to see this article but then was sad that the topical cream didn't work. The pain we endure for beauty!!!!
11I'm not laughing at you, I'm merely laughing in your general direction. My husband uses this canker sore ointment that numbs the pain long enough so he can eat. He sometimes forgets he has it on when he kisses me. My lips go all numb, too.
12wow...i have really low pain tolerance and i was thinking of doing my bikini line and underarms. Now I'm thinking not....hmmmm....
13Ouch! I've had a few sessions of laser hair removal, but it was never unbearable pain; more like getting snapped with a rubber band. It sounds like your technician had the machine too high. At least you made some progress for all your pain and trouble!
14Sounds awful!
15You ought to try out the no! no! thingy at Sephora and let us know how that goes. Ask the Sephora blogger lady to hook you up- $250 is way expensive!
16I definitely don't do pain! I stick to shaving even though it annoys me sometimes.
17I've had bikini area (extended) laser hair removal, and it was completely painless. My Dr. did say I have a high pain tolerance, but honestly felt nothing!
18i wonder if that new "no no" hair removew sephora is gonna put out soon hurts that bad??
19i feel you sister...i've had laser for my underarms and it was the second most painful procedure i've ever had...i have my third session coming and not looking forward to it..
20I used to have a friend who had to have her upper lip lasered, I saw her go through all of that pain but I can say she never numbered herself like that. :giggle:
21omg that sounds so terrible!
22Oh no, poor you.. i feel so bad..
23That liplicking, that could have been me too.
my husband got his neck lasered, he has super senstive skin and shaving kills him, and he was always super grumpy after each session because of the pain. Then to make matters worse the hair all grew back about a year latter.
24ouch! That sounds awful
. poor thing
25It depends on the person, I have an aunt who did it and said it was fine (she was always fine with waxing too).
I'm pretty good with waxing, and I even use an epilator in between sessions (which hurts pretty bad, but I tolerate it because I never shave).
But when I tried laser it hurt like a b*tch!!!!! Honestly I would describe it as having every individual hair pulled out by a crochet needle. If it was only a couple of times I could bear it, but I've already had four sessions and I figure I would need 7-9 total to finish (that's what most people say). And I wouldn't be able to handle it. I think the only place that didn't hurt was the upper lip, and that numbing cream really does nothing.
It definitely does work though, you can see such a difference from before, and comparing to areas where I haven't done it.
I'm not getting a nono because the same company that makes it started out making laser machines. Can you say PAIN????
26Oh, ouch! You poor thing!! *LOL*
Good story, nonetheless.
27I am currently getting laser treatments for my bikini area and even though I have pretty good pain tolerance, I take 3-4 advil, 1 hour before my treatment. I found that it helps me a lot. It also helps if they turn on a cooling fan while they are using the laser.
28omg - poor you , i feel so sorry for you
29i wanted to go and do a laser removal too , after reading this i'll think i pass!
