Fashion Week starts tomorrow, and I'm excited to see some new faces on the runway. It's fun to spot top models such as Jessica Stam alongside up-and-comers like Hana Soukupova. For me, seeing the brand-new girls is one of the most exciting parts of any show.
Still, I know there are people who miss the era of the supermodel, when Naomi, Cindy, Linda and Christy dominated the runways and magazine covers. Claudia Schiffer recently said those days are over:
"In order to become a supermodel one must be on all the covers all over the world at the same time so that people can recognize the girls. That is, for now, not possible, not least because the advertising industry is very much taken nowadays by pop stars and actresses. Supermodels like we once were don't exist anymore."
She does have a point: Drew Barrymore is the new spokesmodel for Cover Girl, while Keira Knightley replaced Kate Moss as the face of Coco Mademoiselle. But is this necessarily a bad thing? Personally, I love Drew and would rather see such a smart, talented lady selling makeup than another pretty face. Tell me, would you rather gaze at supermodels or actresses—or would you rather see "normal" women in their places? Source

I would love to see a pretty unknown once in a while. Not some scrawny dime a dozen model type- a real, normal woman.
1i grew up in the era of the glamazons that then turned into heroin chic. i'd like to see the supermodels come back and dominante their territory. it would be nice to see a real women every once in a while and not the adriana lima's and alessandra ambrosio's of the world.
2I'd love to see the supermodel come back. There's a reason why you have models. There's nothing worse than looking at a shoot and the actress/singer in it clearly doesn't know how to hold herself for the camera. I'm thinking of the Fergie photos that were shown recently.
3as someone who works in the modeling industry, I'd love to see the era of the supermodel return. I got into the industry because of the Claudia's, Christy's, Naomi's, and Cindy's. Now that the industry has changed, it's hard and few and far between who ever become that well known and famous. I'd love to see models on the covers of the magazines, and Sports Illustrated Swimsuit again (ick..beyonce).....
4I like to see healthy women. So imo that includes both drew barrymore and some models like cindy crawford , christy etc.
Infact i think Adriana Lima is perfectly healthy.
Being from south america myself i know that having a shape like hers is quite common.
But kate moss and co IMO are not all they are cracked up to be.
My friend models at london fashion week and according to her nearly everyone has some sort of disorder or drug addiction..including herself.
Its such a sad state of affairs for an industry that is supposedly *glamourous*.
5I remember back in the 90s when I would watch House of Style and Style with Elsa Klench religiously and would know all the names of the models. I could just rattle off first and last names like nobodies business, now I don't know who is who, unless it's a VS model.
My mother and I was just talking about how a lot of the magazines have celebs on the cover and rarely models anymore. One time me and a friend were talking about some magazine and I said who is on the cover, she's like I don't know, some model. lol
I have my favorite celebs and I am glad that Drew is part of Cover Girl but yea, I'd like to see the return of the supermodel.
6I would prefer if the supermodels took over again.
7I'd rather see supermodels. I really am tired of seeing actresses on the cover of Vogue. In fact, the best two Vogues this year featured models on the cover. First, the one with new faces such as Chanel Iman and second, the one with Natalia Vodianova on the cover. Also, frankly, I'd prefer not to see regular people. I don't know why, I mean the Dove campaign where they use normal (i still say above average looking people) was refreshing and great, but I dont know, maybe I've been brainwashed by the beauty industry and all that it entails. Also, Claudia Schiffer is wrong. There are still supermodels. How can she account for the fact that millions know who Gisele Bundchen is, or Gemma Ward. I can look through Vogue and name all the supermodels of our time. It may be diff. to her because then, there were only a few big names ( Schiffer herself, Campbell, Turlington, and Evangalista) and now there are more and more. Also, there are still huge supermodels that basically even outshine their own legacies, like Kate Moss. Sorry for the long post
8BRING BACK SUPERMODELS. There is something about the time when supermodels ruled. It was wonderful for fashion! I enjoy actresses just as much as the next person, but they are actresses not super models. A supermodel has that face and can give you that look than can completely turn a picture around. Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, so on and so on. Those were super models that commanded attention wheter it be print ads or the runway. I am in full support of bringing on a new line of super models. Bring back those bad ass b*tches.
9Bring back the supermodels. Thats their job, and they do it WELL.
10Supermodels...what would haute couture be without them?
11i think i am nostalgic for the supermodels, and I don't really care about the actresses. like supermodels, they are in the business likely because they were good looking to begin with. I like seeing Drew's face because she's not anorexic looking.
12and personally, I'd like to see an image of beauty that does not look 13 years old. whether they are models or not, put some grown up women in there! i cannot identify in the least with teenage girls.
13"I would love to see a pretty unknown once in a while. Not some scrawny dime a dozen model type- a real, normal woman."
14Colormesticky, I agree completly.
Fashion is supposed to be about the clothes, right? So, if you're trying to show me your clothes, use somebody who knows how to wear the clothes well, i.e., a professional model. If an actress or singer is suited for the job, go ahead and use her, but do you want to catch my interest because of your awesome clothes, or because I want the gossip on the latest starlet?
That being said, I think supermodels are unnecessary. It's fine to appreciate who wears the clothes well or has an exceptionally pretty face, but to get that kind of money and adulation just for wearing pretty clothes and making pouty faces seems kind of ridiculous, and indicates to me that society's priorities are slightly askew.
15The SuperMOdel era needs to come back! ASAP...its like when is the last time a model was on cover of a fashion magazine...it is fashion and they are selling clothes
16We need supermodels! Who cares to see an actress modeling something...shes not a MODEL!! It's a models job to be perfect and in my opinion it what makes it sell not some so-so looking actress
17I really like the celebs as models. They are much more relatable than a size 0 model.
18BRING THE SUPERS BACK!!!! IT SEEMS LIKE AMERICA IS SO OBSESSED WITH CELEBS.. SO OVER!!! LINSDAY, BRIT, PARIS... GET OVER IT! MODELS ARE MORE PRETTIER I THINK, COME ON!
19It should be a little of both. Only classy people, no slutty sleaze buckets like Lohan and Spears. Puleeeze!
20I prefer models on high end designers and magazines like Vogue. I dont think being an actress means they can model and although having an actress on may give an ad some visibility, I have seen many ads that I think suck cuz the actress does not know how to model.
21I rather see Jessica Stam doing Louis Vuitton over lohan and J lo anyday.
I'd much rather supermodels than actresses, etc taking over the magazines and campaigns. They should have two seperate jobs, jeez. Models do their thing (magazines, ad campaigns, etc) and actresses should do theirs (ACT)
22I wanna see some supermodels!
