Earlier this year, I asked you to estimate the cost of all the beauty products you wear each day. Some hovered around the very inexpensive $10 range, while others danced around $1,000. However many beauty items you put on daily, have you ever stopped to think about how many chemicals this equates? Research from Bionsen, company that manufactures natural deodorant, concluded that, on average, women put 515 different synthetics on their bodies daily. Some common products mentioned include: shampoo (15), hairspray (11), blush (16), eye shadow (26), foundation (24), lipstick (33), deodorant (15), lotion (32), self-tanner (22), nail polish (31), and perfume (250). "Lots of the high-tech, new generation cosmetics and beauty 'wonder' treatments naturally contain more chemicals to achieve even better results, which, of course, means women apply more chemicals than ever before," said Bionsen's Charlotte Smith. While some argue that these questionable ingredients, like the controversial methylparabens, are safe in small doses, one still wonders about their cumulative effects. Many even go as far to say that not only do these synthetic ingredients cause fertility issues and cancer, but that these chemicals are actually causing us to age faster.
On the flip side, the Cosmetic Toiletries and Perfumery Association takes a different stance, saying "Stringent laws require all cosmetics to be safe, and each product undergoes a rigorous safety assessment. The number of ingredients in a product, or whether it is natural or man-made, has no bearing on how safe it is." But are these safety laws delving deep enough? What do you think?

I don't think so. I always buy organic, natural beauty products. They're a bit more expensive than some of the cheaper regular brands I could buy, but I think it's worth it.
1yeah biarose, i think i will hop on that train. organic seems like the best way to go, b/c there's no way all of those chemicals are safe for you.
2A lot of the ingredients repeat in most of the product groups. Like shampoos and body washes, or blushes and eye shadows. but yeah. at first i thought 'come on' my hand lotion surely doesn't have more than 7 ingredients. but it has a huge list, i can't even be bothered to count.

6My beauty product is made up of castor oil, coconut oil, shea butter and natural scented oil. Use it for skin, hair, lips, face. The only bad thing is my perfume which has alcohol in it.
7um, actually there are plenty of ways to make natural products with natural preservatives. Try lines like Aubrey, Mychelle, Skin Organics, Suki. For makeup, check out Mineral Fusion. I have tons of these products and they never go "bad" or rancid or anything. People are just miseducated!
8Bioethique is an amazing line of organic skincare. 95% certified organic. It's true though, a lot of companies claim they are "organic" and they just throw that term on their packaging. You really have to do the research to make sure you know exactly what is in the product. Most products being imported don't even require testing before they come into the states or Canada, they just require the company to fill out a form stating what's in the product. So basically, they can fill out whatever they want. Unless someone gets some sort of serious reaction to the product, then they might possibly think about testing the product. Kinda scary.
9Allytta- trust me, I do read the labels. I don't just see "organic" or "natural" on the front and buy it. And yeah, there are plenty of natural preservatives that they use.
