Since I have green eyes, I've always been told that purple shades of eye shadow would be a great way to make my eyes pop. So a couple of days ago I went to the drugstore and bought a creamy purple shadow and a deep purple eyeliner. As I was doing my makeup for a night out with my girlfriends, I wasn't completely sold on my new look, but I thought I'd get my friends' opinion before tossing my brand new goods.
All night long my friends kept asking me if I was okay. After the third interrogation, I got a little bit annoyed and I headed for the ladies' room to take a load off. I figured I could count to ten and then come out all smiles — after all, nothing was wrong! At least I thought nothing was wrong until I looked in the mirror and noticed something dreadful.

My eyes looked completely bloodshot and red. The new purple makeup I bought was having some kind of counter-effect on me! I vowed to throw it away once I got home and to finally go and get a professional makeover. Has this ever happened to anybody else?

Yes... I'm Mac Nw20 . Green eyes/ red hair. I have to be really careful of the purples I use. If it's too plummy or has too much red, it looks like my eyes are irritated. Lavender colors just look garish! It's got to be the right
'purple'
I love Mac Cranberry and Trax or Sketch. They make my eyes pop!
I also love the POP Beauty Green eye class.
Mac Macroviolet fluidline is a great color to play with too.
1No, not with eyeshadow. It's happened with lipstick that was too pale once though. People kept asking me if I was sick. Sorry about your night out Bella, that stinks.
2I think it's an allergy to particular red pigments. I saw it all the time when I was a Lancome BA.
MAC Cranberry is lovely, shade-wise
3Yea eyeshadow has done that to me too...
4You have to be super careful...and getting a pro to show which one is perfect for you always saves TONS of time and money!
Not with makeup, but this facial cleanser once made my face red and itchy-it was awful. Sometimes spending a few extra $$ is totally worth it!
5Yes Bella, I m allergic to the red dye they use in purple eyeliner. My eyes were always itchy and red in the morning after I wore my favorite eyeliner by Revlon in the color Vixen.
6Might want to try something like Bare Minerals... more natural and less risk of irritation.
7Oh no! I can't remember a time I've reacted that badly to makeup. I'm sorry it happened though! What brand did you buy?
8I have green eyes and sometimes when I wear purple eyeshadow my eyes get really red too...I 'm not sure why though so I veer away from the darker shades of purple and only use the light ones. Then my eyes don't look as bloodshot.
9Ooo you developed an allergy to the eyeshadow.. I actually developed an allergy to liquid eyeliner from Physican's Formula.. For me though, my eyes started to get red & scratchy maybe about 30 minutes after I applied..
Bummer!
10I've never had that happen before. However I do know a great purple liner. Its from Jordana and the color is Purple (its like .99 cents) I have blue eyes and really like to wear purple
11I've had that problem with certain mascara's. A few it took a little while to figure out, but there have been certain ones that have caused an instant reaction.
12I love wearing purple on my eyes (I have blue eyes tho) and have never really had a problem - or at least not that I can remember.
I have a couple of the shades mentioned above: Cranberry and Trax (both from Mac).
13I love both of them. Cranberry is almost more of a deep pink/purple mix and looks great when paired with a deeper gold...I use trax as a crease colour mostly, but it's one my favourites - the girls at the Mac counter usually comment on it when I go in!!
That's strange I've never heard of that happening before.
14It has never happened to me and I wear purple on a weekly basis. I have brown eyes and the purple shadow and eyeliner makes my eyes pop! I use Laura Mercier, Chanel, Mary Kay and Lancome eyeshadows. For eyeliners, most of my pencils are Laura Mercier, Mary Kay and Urban Decay.
15Try it again but this time but Physician's Formula make-up or Bare Escentuals....something natural that is mineral based.
that make-up in the pic looks like a massive shiner...
16This has happened to me, but I didn't think about the possibility of allergy. I dismissed (and dumped) the violet hues for eyes. I'll leave it for accessories.
17Coinicidentally, I'm wearing my favorite Bobbi Brown eyeshadow combo today: Petal on the upper lid, Heather (light purple) on the lower lid, with Eggplant (darker purple) as the liner. It makes my hazel eyes look green and I've never had a problem with allergic reactions.
18Not with eyeshadow. I once tried an a Loreal liquid eyeliner on my inner eyelids and my eyes swole completely shut!!! I guess I had an adverse effect with the liner. I had to spend the evening with an icepack compress on my eyes! I have never used Loreal liquid eyeliners since!
19Maybe you should go for a lilac with a deeper purple at the edge of the eyes. I think that maybe the type of eyeshadow that you bought gave you an allergy.
20Don't go darker! You are obs allergic to the purple dye. I tried this many times, different brands and the same thing happened next day red, itchy, irritated eyes. I read online very few people are allergic to the purple dye used to make the eyeliner. It's best to stay away, bummer because I thought it looked really nice on me (I have dark brown eyes) and I got many compliments but no way would I put my eyes through that hell again.
21I'm fair, and have blue eyes, but if I use any eyeshadow like brown or purple with just a hint of red, than I look awfull, like I've been crying or something. Orange aswell, but I can wear very light shades of orange with lots of shimmer, like B.E. glimpses. I have to use purple bordering on blue, or very cool browns, because it's one thing to make youe eyes pop - but an entirely different story when they look as if they're popping out!
I do have some redness around the eyes and nose naturally, and when it comes to make up it's most important to play that down.
22I love purple shadow. Here's a tip: it doesn't have to LOOK purple to be purple. What I mean, is that sometimes they'll look purple in the compact, but go on more gray or brown. They still have the same effect! So if you got something less purple but still purple, maybe that'd work. Good luck!
23I'm absolutely in love with Bare Escentuals' Mineral Eyeshadow in Soul Sister. It is a rich, pigmented purple with lots of fine glitter that is a pure purple. Its sister color, Opera, had the same effect on me where after a few minutes the color turned a rusty red. But I definitely recommend Soul Sister - I've got all of my girlfriends hooked.
24I'm sorry...thats never happened to me
25I thought I was the only one. It happened once before and I thought the liner was bad. I tried a new liner the other day and the same thing happened. Then I found out that my daughter has the same problem. She said she's tried many different purple eyeliners and she has the same problem with all.
26Since I do like bare minerals makeup, I might be willing to try one of their liners. Of course, this will have to be when I have nowhere to go that particular weekend.
BEWARE! Lots of women are allergic to purple and violet shadows and liners. I have been using Clinique for twenty years and I love it! This past November I had a makeover there to try some new products and chose the violet liner and shadow look. I purchased the eyeliner. The next morning my eyes were stuck shut, goopy and beat red! I went to the doctor who gave me eye drops for pink eye. Within a few days I was back to normal but then it happened AGAIN the next time I used it... I went to an opthamologist who said it wasn' the makeup...... he gave me MORE drops. I did sterilize my eyeliner with alcohol and peroxide just in case I was re-infecting myself. Then it happened for the third time. This time I did not use drops and it went away in two days. Just this weekend I went to the Clinique counter and asked if anyone had ever complained of allergic reactions to ANY of their products. She said only a few things - ALL OF THEM BEING VIOLET OR PURPLE BASED makeup. Stay away from it...
27I got green eyes and have excellent experienses with the purple cubicles from the body shop. I bought them because I neaded another color in the box (these little cubics come in fours... and along with the purples there's a dark green and a highlighter). I tried on the light and dark pruple combination, and wow! Reslly makes the green color visible.
