Last week, I had a real treat: I was able to interview the incomparable Dita Von Teese before her burlesque performance at Macy's Passport in San Francisco. Passport is a fundraiser for HIV/AIDS research, so it made perfect sense to have Dita appear. She's the face of MAC's Viva Glam campaign, which has raised—get this—nearly $100 million to fight the disease.
Dita was gracious as she talked about her forthcoming second book, the difference between beauty and glamour, and what high school was like. Take a look:

For more tidbits from my talk with Dita, read more
- Dita wore a feathered Marchesa dress and MAC Mattene lipstick in You Say Tomato. (It should be in stores within the next week.)
- The smoothness and creaminess of her skin is unreal. Even though she was wearing makeup, I could tell that she takes very good care of it. She told me that she wears MAC Prep + Prime, which has SPF 50.
- Those rumors about her swimming only at night and closing curtains at hotels to stay out of the sun? Rumors! Dita admitted that she often closes curtains at hotels, but only for privacy while she's changing. "I'm not an exhibitionist," she said with a laugh.
- I asked if she had any beauty secrets. Aside from the SPF, she credits drinking a lot of water and getting enough sleep each night.
- I had a dork-out moment because we both grew up in small towns in Michigan. I was too dorky, however, to tell her that she'd inspired me to take burlesque lessons. There are some things just too nerdy to admit!

She is one of my idols, simply stunning.
1Lol, I was under the assumption that she'd have a higher-pitched voice.
2I really like her look & her attitude. I wish my skin looked half as good as hers.
3i love the corseted waist.
4She's so...normal sounding. I'd expected some sort of Jessica Rabbit voice but she's absolutely 100% an american girl. How interesting.
5Love, love, love her.
6I also was expecting a much creamier, glamorous voice, and then she opened her mouth and that boring American accent came out. Surprised me.
Bellasugar, good interview, but you spelled 'writing' wrong on your frame titles. Writing does not have a double t.
7So glad you like the interview — she's a cool lady, isn't she?
Ashleygaidhlig, thanks for having an eagle eye. We spelled "writing" correctly but the dot of the I's blends with the cross of the T, so that's probably why it looks blurry!
8she's so classy. I would love to have skin as amazing and luminous as hers.
9She inspired me to wear red lipstick to my birthday party!
10It's also nice to hear a voice to associate with Bella. That's cool.
11I like her, and she's quite stunning!
12She was amazing skin and I too was surprised by her voice.
13Annie, that's excellent! I also interviewed Dita at SF Passport - how coincidental!
14She seems like such a real entertainer just because she embodies every fiber of a pinup glamour girl. She also carries herself like a class act. Love her!
15WONDERFUL WONDERFUL! SOOO GREAT AND I'VE NEVER SEEN HER IN AN INTERVIEW...SHE SEEMS JUST AWESOME! AND BELLA - CAN I JUST GIVE YOU PROPS FOR SUCH A GREAT SPEAKING VOICE...WOW!!!! YOU SHOULD DO VOICE-OVERS FOR REAL!
16She looks great! I've been wondering about primers..I think I may have to get the MAC Prep + Prime...
17i'm not a fan of hers, but she looks very glamorous. and i agree with others when they say they were surprised by her voice! i guess i had never heard her speak because that wasn't what i was expectiing.
18Gads, I love her! *sigh*
19I was very surprised by her voice ... I've never heard her speak until now, ha! I think she's very smart, down-to-earth, and of course, glamorous!
20She seems down to earth. I love that she does her own make-up. I was inspired to go out and by more MAC products, I'm glad the money is going to a good cause.
21What an awesome interview! She has a lot more substance to her that I expected. Very well-spoken and graceful, yet also very real. Nice work Bella.
22Shes gorgeous-I agree that her voice was not at all what I expected. I was expecting her to speak in one of those really pretnetious upity up accents (like Gregs mom from Dharma and Greg) But she sounds so normal
23Great interview, I also expected her to have a cliched voice to go with the look, and was thrilled to hear her have such a nice soft-spoken, graceful sound. She's so glamorous!
24Great interview, Bella! She's so cute and soft-spoken. Very surprising given her persona! And yes, slather that SPF 50 on, ladies!
25What an awesome lady! I will be buying her book!
Great interview!
26I covet her skin...
27I think I just fell in love.
28SHE IS AN ICON!
29She is GORGEOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love that she dress retro all the time but still seems real and down to earth. She is super classy
30Simply amazing. Great woman.
31she's so cool.
32I absolutely love this woman, my idol.
33I think every should step back and take a look at her being her, and that she is a very glamourous, beautiful woman. Even If it does mean that she sounds 'plain ol' american' like a lot of people complain about. Im glad she doesn't put on a show, she lets everyone know that she's just like you and me.
I love her skin, she is beautiful and glamourous!
34Dita is so beautiful and I love her sense of style. She ALWAYS looks put together and comes up with really beautiful re-interpretations of that old Hollywood hair style.
35Ahhhh she's awesome! I, too, wear Prep + Prime SPF50 to protect my skin - and I kind of desperately want that Mattene she's wearing.
36I really like her.
