I've been eagerly anticipating MAC's newest lipstick, Mattene ($14.50), for months. I'd heard that the texture was going to be close to matte, but not flat-matte, so it could be a nice alternative to a glossy, shiny lip.
I've checked out seven of the 16 Mattene colors, and I can happily say that my high hopes were justified. I put it on in Classic Dame, a blood red, and a bunch of the Sugar girls complimented me right away. You might think they're just being nice, but trust me, I'm always pawing around in makeup, and never before have I gotten such good feedback! For product pictures and the full review, read more
Hey hey, it's me wearing Classic Dame! The lipstick comes in a slimmer tube than MAC's usual bullet-shaped tubes, but it's still got that vanilla scent that I love. Application was a breeze—it goes on smoothly and evenly, with no pulling. The semi-matte finish looks different depending on the color choice. With Classic Dame, I felt like a '40s siren with a bold but not brash red lip. But Composure is soft enough to look like my natural lip color, just bumped up a notch.
The color stays for hours, and the formula isn't drying. I could see Mattene being a holy-grail lipstick for women of a certain age, since it has good staying power, doesn't feather, and isn't glossy. I'll be wearing it a lot this fall, so you know what I think. But if you stop by a MAC counter, let me know what you think.

does it rub off easily? like if you're drinking your morning cup of coffee? looks very moisturizing though! I might actually try this one! (I hate lipstick but this reminds me of the newer neutrogena line that's been out for a while which I love, only these colors are up a few notches!)
1I got the email yesterday about this (as my avatar shows!) and I really want to try it. I'll most definitely order one next time I order from MAC, it looks fabulous!
2It's hard for me to part with my lip gloss, but I will at least try it at the MAC counter.
3Looks great on you and the color selection they offer for this is fab! I don't own any Mac yet but this may be a first purchase!

5I picked up the Cafe Matte yesterday! It'a a beautiful creamy, soft brown and it looks really pretty on (I have light skin and dark brunette hair). I haven't gotten to wear it too much (obviously!) but the staying power seemed quite good. It lasts a long time when you're not eating, but might need a touch-up after meals. It isn't drying, but it definitely feels drier than the glossy lips I'm used to right now, so after an hour or so I added a thin layer of gloss. Beautiful and comfy!
6I love MAC make-up, I can't wait to get to a store to try this out!
7I like the brown shades. Will try this sometime. Lookin' good, Bella.
8I love MAC - flattering looks like a nice color as well..I still like lip gloss..but i will check this out thanks!!
9Sounds like MAC is continuing to bring the glam, as usual.
10I agree with Glosslizard — you might need to touch up after a snack, but the staying power is pretty good.
11I bought myself a tube of Caffe Latte yesterday, and I love it! I hope they come out with more colors!!!
12i've heard some good buzz about these, i will definitely have to try these out. i usually prefer lip gloss to show, but since i do just put it on top of regular lipstick, this will be great.
13I am such a gloss girl but I am surely making my way over to MAC this weekend.
14I love this lipstick! I get so many compliments on it and it stays on forever!
15I looked at the shades on the website, and was disappointed there wasn't a deep red/brown shade (like Nars Congo Red). Classic Dame is a little bright for me. Composure looks like it would be a good everyday kind of shade.
16I suppose I'm part of the minority that prefers lipstick to gloss (Much to the disappointment of my significant other). Flattering looks great, I'll try it and maybe cop, but it looks good anyway. I'm sure it'll be a soft nude, not too light. 40's pink looks hot as well.
Next up, I'm really looking forward to the holiday collection! They always pull something really beautiful out for us.
17I wonder how these compare to the Slimshines? I love those, but if Mattene is similar I won't need both kinds!
18I love them! Tango is also a really lovely color.
19so excited for these!!! cafe latte looks nice!
20They are amazing, I bought 4, might buy more as I see fit. They are nothing like the Slimshines, which are sheer to me. Since I have pigmented lips (with a browny top lip and a pink lower lip), it's really important that I have a lipstick that covers.
Bonus is that you don't have to feel like you are wearing lipstick, they are very light.
To me, they feel very comfortable and not dry at all, although I never found mattes to be uncomfortable. It lasts pretty well, and it does come off when you eat, but not in a bad way, it leaves a nice stain on my mouth, but not around it (my typical issue with red lipglasses or lustre lipsticks.
I know because I just ate a turkey sandwich, cut up pieces of Asian pears and a Diet Coke Zero.
21Oh! I love Composure and Rougette. I think I'll pop into MAC this weekend.
22Bella--I read your post yesterday afternoon and went and bought Classic Dame right after work. I LOVE it. I'm usually a bit hesistant about trying lipstick because my lips are quite plump and lipstick often dries them out. But this looks and feels perfect! I put it on at about 530ish and it was still on at 8 last night.
23I just picked up "40's pink" and I am in love!
24classic dame looks gorgeous, I so am gonna get this!
25Love MAC and all their products...I use nothing but MAC!
26I love that colour classic dame. immodest and composure look nice too
27I use the old mac lipsticks and their fabulous, so rich and creamy. So can't wait to give this a go! Think i'll go for the nude colours like Composure and Flattering.
