The term "metrosexual" was just a blip on the cultural radar, but the business of men's grooming is far from a fad. Some guys will always opt for a trip to the simple, no-fuss barber. My dad, for instance, pays a whopping $7 to have his "ears lowered," as he puts it. Works just fine for him.
But for a certain breed of man—urban, well-paid and trendsetting—Supercuts won't do it. Instead, this kind of guy is heading to men-only spas and salons. These places cater to the modern-gentleman type who knows how to make a martini, reads GQ, and so forth. And the perks sound fantastic. For instance:
- At the rockabilly-inspired Belmont Barber Shop in Chicago, guys can shoot a game of pool after their shave.
- At Los Angeles spa Mark Matthew, men are ushered into an area that looks more like a swank living room than a spa. Leather chairs, flat-screen TVs and complimentary beer, wine or scotch create a gentlemanly environment.
- Shown here, MR in San Francisco offers a $65 monthly membership that includes a haircut, a touch-up, a shoe shine, and a drink at the bar. (Yes, there's a bar.)
Of course, there are dozens of other options all over the country, but these three give a good idea of what's out there. Something tells me that more than a few dudes wouldn't mind getting a gift certificate to one of these places. Even Papa Bella might
go in for a manly manicure if he were able to watch the Bears while doing it. Okay, maybe not. But I think he's the exception, not the rule.

Play pool after a shave! That is so funny! But I guess girls do their thing too right?!
1My parents own a men's grooming franchise... They have a pool table, Xbox, Playstation, massage chairs, and flat screen tvs with sports on while you wait...
This is a huge national trend, and new chains are popping up all over the place!
2I would pay $65 a month for a hair cut, touch up (not sure what that is exactly-trim?), a shoe shine and a drink....sign me up.
3I'm sorry, guys that have to do this kind of stuff just weird me out...I gotta say, it's a big turn-off for me.
My husband is so not a "metrosexual", he leaves the primping to me!
4Sounds freakin' awesome. I wish there was some place around here like that for me.
I love that guys taking care of themselves, admittedly to an elevated degree, is a turn-off to some women. Everyone has their own standards, I suppose.
To me, however, this seems like a men's club of sorts, like a hunting club or golf club. (hehe)
5Send your man off to relax and be pampered and he just might come home with a better mood, attitude, ready to wrap his arms around you. Of course, after he takes out the trash, kills and field dresses a deer, and uh lets see...drinks a beer, watches a sporting event, and scratches himself.
I think this is a little over the top.
But I do have to say I like how my boyfriend always makes sure his outfit is well put together and he takes the time to do his hair "just so." I mean I still take waaaaaaaaaaay longer than him to get ready for anything but I like that he takes the time to look nice and isn't just some guy who will throw "whatever" on and not do anything with his hair, just have it cut in some bland boring way.
I think there is a good in between a metro guy and some "quick rick" as I'll call it.
6Haha, awesome.
7Terryt18, I don't think it's "guys taking care of themselves" that is a turn-off to some women.
For me, it's the whole over-the-top metrosexual thing that is a turn-off.
I like a more outdoorsy, rugged type of guy if you will...or "no-fuss" guys as Bella put it. I am simply not attracted to guys who spend a lot of time on their looks. But this in no way means that I want a guy who "doesn't take care of himself".
8Omg Bella, my dad uses the "ears lowered" line too! As for the "barber lounges", I think it sounds like a great idea. I do get a little freaked out when guys have obviously-waxed eyebrows or when I spot a guy at the pedi-tub next to me though.
9I think this topic is interesting because it reveals our perceptions, expectations, and attitudes towards male-female roles in our society.
10What about women who don't chase the beauty ideal and are barraged by others and the media who tell them they'd be so much prettier if they'd use a little lipstick and get their eyebrows waxed? Because that's what women are supposed to do.
11I like my pretty boyfriend
12Actually this seems more like a return to old hollywood glamour more than another addition to this term metrosexual. Men have been using luxury services and products for many centuries. It is nothing new and enjoying the occasional indulgence does not make you any less of a man. I just kind of have a thing against the term metrosexual because it seems to imply that you have to be a part of a certain mindset to enjoy what is catergorized as being metrosexual.
13I agree. Metrosexual is a ridiculous term. Thankfully, it never really caught on.
