In yesterday's review of an Olay product, most of the comments condemned the company for testing on animals. So today, I thought I'd highlight some bunny- and kitty-friendly beauty products that recently won PETA's Proggy Awards.
The Proggy Awards are given to various animal-friendly companies, people, and products. Check out the winners:
Best Cruelty-Free Cosmetics Line: Urban Decay
This one wasn't a surprise, since Urban Decay has always been strongly against animal testing. It also has vegan products clearly labeled, so it's easy to avoid animal products altogether if you like.
Best Cruelty-Free Personal Care Product Line: White Rain
Whoa. Who saw this one coming? As it turns out, White Rain is another vegan line that doesn't test on animals—proof that you don't need a lot of cash to be a conscientious shopper.
Best Cruelty-Free Personal Care Product: Max Green Alchemy Scalp Rescue Shampoo
I hadn't heard of this shampoo, but it sounds pretty cool. As PETA says, they're not only "vegan and cruelty-free, they are also free of parabens, PVP, and other mysterious petrochemicals." Good times.
To see who scored points in food, entertainment, and religion (yep, religion!), check out the the complete list. Yay for PETA for giving credit where credit's due. Now if they could just put the kibosh on the whole objectification-of-women thing, we'd be best pals.

Southpole
Betty Barclay
Dolce & Gabbana
Thanks for posting this. This is the stuff I like to know! I'm still never using White Rain, however.

2Thanks Bella, just yesterday I thought I needed to check animal testing companies.
Now I have to
find a replacement!
3It's a shame about Pantene and Elvive though, these are my two fav shampoos.
White Rain?? Hmmmm...never would have guessed that.
I love Urban Decay.
4Yes I knew about UD for awhile...didn't know about White rain though!
5I followed the link to the page indicating companies that do or don't do animal testing, and I have an issue. L'Oreal tests on animals, but the Body Shop doesn't - I thought L'Oreal had bought the Body Shop?
Also, does anyone know if Sephora or Avene do animal testing?
6Yeahhh White Rain is surprising! But I LOVE Urban Decay
Also Too Faced: their motto is amazing - "Tested on celebrities, not on animals!"
7Definitely surprised by White Rain. Thanks for this, Bella!
Now I just need to look for more products to replace so many of my beauty products! (Since they're tested on animals...Boooooo)
8White Rain? Oh my.
Somebody had a list of companies that tested on animals/don't test on animals.... Can you post it again?
9Just check out caringconsumer.com for a full list of companies that do/do not test on animals.
10I like Bare Escentuals, and I've been making my own beauty products too. It's really fun and earthy feeling, and my skin looks AWESOME. I just woke up from a nap today and when my husband saw me, he thought I had slept in makeup because my complexion just looks that great.
Advah - if you mean Aveda then no Aveda doesn't animal test - it;s botanicals. They test on people.
However, they tend to promote their global and green awareness over their animal testing stance.
As for Sephora - do you mean their own make-up line? You'd have to find out what companies manufacture each individual product and sometimes each individual color of each product. Sephora is owned by LVMH which in itself is going to be offensive to some Sugar members.
11FYI - Anita Roddick (creator/owner of TBS) sold The Body Shop for a pretty profit just like the owners of Burt's Bee. She sold her company to L'Oreal. Tah dah!
12Also, very sadly she passed away last September, didn't see much coverage of her passing.
Awesome post! But White Rain??? Seriously???? Has it changed since I was a pre-teen? Because I recall it being all kinds of awful!!
13The Sephora Brand makeup is NOT tested on animals...I've inquired to the company. Aveeno DOES...if that was meant to be Aveeno not Aveda.
I blogged about Animal testing a while back...its a huge pet peeve of mine since its completely unnecessary.
PETA has a lot of info on who does, but a lot of times you can inquire to the companies themselves too.
14"Now if they could just put the kibosh on the whole objectification-of-women thing, we'd be best pals." Man, sometimes you Sugar Gals make my heart just soar like the eagle.
15White Rain Really??? Well I feel better about my hubby's dollar store White Rain hairspray.
16Bella - I didn't mean to hijack the thread yesterday, but I had just found out that companies still tested. In my happy little world, they didn't do that anymore. But it struck a nerve and seems important to a lot of readers, so I guess it is a good thing I brought it up
Advah - I hope Avene doesn't as I was thinking of switching to them from La Roche Posay (L'Oreal owned). I have an email into them.
Not all companies are on the list, I called Benefit and they assured me they did not test. I also called VYX and they are cruelty free.
I"m going to Sephora tomorrow to replace some of my Lancome stuff with Urban Decay ... and other brands that don't.
17The truth is, most products are tested on animals unless they explicitly state they are not. Some companies may not have labels, but that's a hot-button issue now and they'd LOVE to put it on their products if it were true. Everything from the shampoo and products in your hair, the dyes in the clothes you're wearing, and the polish on your toes. Yay for PETA (I'm a member), but just because they bring exposure doesn't make that the only company to steer clear of, and if you're going to have a cause, you might as well go all out and actually do some research on the brands you use/clothes you wear/materials that are used in your house. I just don't want anyone thinking they're saving the world by boycotting Dove.
18This is great to know, thanks Bella!! But oddly I have a strange urge to go polish my puppies toenails and chow down on some cheeseburgers.... =)) HAHAHAHA, no really.. a burger sounds sooo good right now, I'm starving!
19white rain, at least the dollar stores know the value of cruelty-free personal care.
