Can you guess what the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure is? If you guessed breast augmentation, you're right. But one thing that some women don't know is that breast implants aren't a one-time deal. They need to be replaced over time, or you could run into some pretty unpleasant health problems. Even before their recommended 10-to-15-year replacement time passes, some women run into trouble. Worst-case scenario, the implant ruptures, spilling saline or silicone into your body. Or scar tissue can form around the implants, causing disfigurement. In either case, the implants need to be replaced. This New York Times story examines the issue in detail. Tons of interesting stuff in here, including this:
“Your implants may last less than 10 years or more than 10 years, but when you start having problems with them, your health insurance is unlikely to cover the M.R.I. tests or the reoperations,” said Carol Ciancutti-Leyva, the director of a 2007 anti-implant documentary called Absolutely Safe. “It can be a very expensive proposition, especially if you are young.”
Another interesting tidbit: Doctors don't have to disclose information about how long implants may last. One woman quoted says that her doctor never told her she'd need to have "re-surgery." (Bitter surprise that was, I bet.) I've never really wanted implants, but the story is a must-read if you or someone you know is considering augmentation—or if you're just fascinated by the phenomenon, as I am.

I've always wanted implants till yrs ago I realized this. I would never want to shell out up to another 10k every 5-10 yrs. No thank you.
I really do not think enough young women know this or realize how pricey this can be. They think, oh I'll worry about it then, not always the case ladies...

4I have a boob job and I am very aware that I will have to get them replaced. It was worth every penny and will be in the future! The best decision I ever made
But that's just my opinion and experience.
5If you're financially able to go through with the surgery, that's great. But aimee is right, I don't think a lot of people realize the maintenance and upkeep that goes along with the implants. I'm too low-maintenance to keep up with something like this
and I think my
boobs are happy where they are now. If I ever have kids, though...boob lift? Just a thought.

I think I'd heard this information somewhere before, but it's a good reminder. In either case, I don't think I'd have wanted implants, but just to have the damn things lifted. The girls have gotten a bit slouchy lately (I confess!), but not enough to need implanted augmentation.

9I've considered them before but when I found out that you had to get them re-done every 5-10 years, that was the dealbreaker for me, the costs and the risks involved. My girlfriend and I were actually just talking about the exact same thing the other day.
10From what I understand, men like real ones. So if you're doing this for how you look under clothes, it would make much more sense to invest in a good set of falsies, or whatever they're called now, and save yourself tens of thousands of dollars and a lot of agony.
I think it really shows an underlying lack of self-esteem. About ten years ago a bar had a contest and the prize was breast implants. However, the prize money actually only covered one implant! I don't know how they got away with that one. But anyway, the girl who ended up winning shocked everyone because she already had naturally large breasts! She just wanted them bigger and she forked out the rest of the cash to do them both. The saddest part was that she was in her teens, if I remember correctly.
11I am pretty anti-fake boobs, but - to each her own and all of that. A friend of mine's wife has breast implants, and sure hasn't been a one-time rodeo for her. She's had to go back for check-ups and lifts, blah blah blah. And she wasn't bad at all to begin with. She also longs to pose for Playboy, so that should probably tell me something.
Anyway - I'm content with what I've got, but even if I wanted more, this wouldn't be the route for me.
And, it's true that most guys polled prefer real ones, small or large. To be honest, once they've got your shirt off, I don't think they much care, anyway.
12Hmmmmmmmmmmmm - "I think it really shows an underlying lack of self-esteem" You shouldn't assume that people get breast implants because of low self-esteem. Do you have them? Do you personally know every woman and why she decided to get them? Sure, some people get them because of their self-esteem issues but you shouldn't group all women with breast implants into that category.
13I've never had the desire to get implants and I only have a 32B chest. I don't think there's anything wrong with them, plastic surgery is just not for me. I'm learned to accept and be content with myself as I've gotten older.
I used to wish my chest was a tad bigger, but I never, ever considered implants. And I like that I can wear any type of top I want, with or without a bra. Pretty convenient in the summer
14Every one is different and to each his own. There are tons of reasons good and bad why someone might get implants. There is such a negative stigma towards them, but its ok to get nose jobs and remove loose skin when youve lost a lot of weight? *IMO* it is wrong to categorically say its a good thing or a bad thing. It all depends on the case. That being said, someone who is thinking about getting them or already has gotten them should KNOW that if you get them when you are 20, chances are you will need a replacement sometime in your life (unless you plan on being 40 or 50 with deflated boobs)lol. You cannot rely on the doctor to be your complete source of information, even though in a *perfect* world this would be the case. With all the information available now with the web or even just asking around and visiting several doctors, one should take any surgery seriously and do tons and tons of research. Besides, look at someone like Tara Reid...obviously things can go very wrong lol

Ironically, some people presumed I had breast-implants because my breasts are big for my frame. LOL
18ThePerfectScore (and those who have breast-implants), you may already know this, but the best way to combat gravity is to wear a good, supportive bra ALL THE TIME, except when you sleep or shower.
If you workout, buy special, extra-supportive sport bras designed for well-endowed women. They prevent painful bouncing, and work against gravity. I order mine from a catalogue. Generally, retail sports stores don't carry these bras.
I've maintained these habits for many, many years. My breasts are as lifted as any teenager's.

20I sometimes wish God would've blessed me with a C cup, but I am a B and I really just think implants are quite trashy looking. The people that I know who have them just went way too big for their size. They look really fake and really bad. It can be done tasteful, but I guess most implant victims don't want tasteful. They want to be noticed. I didn't realize they need replaced in 10-15 yrs and you had to pay again for them. YIKES!!

22i want breast implants but a lot of teachers at my school have them and told me about the replacement time...

23Implants being to be re-done is a common misconception (see link below). The extra research is worth it, at least for me it was. I was a super flat A and hey, that's just not right. Every women loves to have boobs, thats just womanly and sexy and we all love to feel what we are, WOMANLY! So call it shallow, or low-self esteem, but to me- they make my clothes fit nicer, they make my body much more proportioned and I dont see myself replacing unless there is a problem, just as my Dr advised BEFORE HAND... He's been a boob Dr for over 20 years and has a very low replacement ratio. Again, unless it ruptures or leaks, replacements are not needed.
