Sometimes, I wonder if there is a secret language of hairstylists. For instance, when you say, "Just an inch off the ends," some hear, "Lose six or seven inches, it depends." There must have been a communication issue this weekend, because when I asked my new stylist to trim the back of my hair, he seemed to have heard, "Nice and mullet-y, please leave it there."

So unfortunately, I have another haircut that looks exactly the same. Seriously, you wouldn't know a pair of shears touched my head. But every cloud in hair care has a silver lining, and this so-so trim gave me a great idea.
When you go to the salon, it's always a good idea to point out photos of hairstyles you like. Doing so helps your stylist see what you're looking for. But here's the twist: From now on, I'm going to bring photos of haircuts I haven't liked. This way, it'll be easy to show the stylist what I don't want. This seems like a good way to get what you're looking for, while visually explaining what you don't love. A win-win situation!

That's a great idea
1I always bring pictures for color and cut and am very emphatic about what I don't like.
I've been in hair hell before, not fun.
2I just got a haircut I love so I took photos so I can get it again.
3My mom gives pictures to her hairstylist of how she wants her hair to look. After many bad haircuts I started to cut my hair myself and I must say I am always satisfied with my haircuts. I just gave my self a some layers, trimmed my hair about 5 inch and I gave myself long bangs. I like my new haircut. =)
4That is so true! I also found out from myself that getting RAZOR cuts with those razors is just calling out for damage for your own hair. It was cool having a cute hairstyle all choppy and what not, but when it grow out, I thought i was wearing a broom as a wig...It sucked!
5Hmmmm.......That sounds like a great idea!!
* There is NOTHING worse then going to the salon, paying a load, leaving the chair and looking just like you did when you got there!!

Good idea, bella! I have gotten four bad haircuts in a row and I bring pictures every time.
7Hehe, that's completely true with those 6 inches instead of 1. It's good idea to take photos, although I probably won't do it...I'm usually okay with any haircut as long as it's layered and with bangs.
8perfect idea!
9this always happens to me. i go in, pay $50, and look the same as i did when i came in!
10Great Idea! I'd just like to find someone who could cut both sides the same length. I've been looking for a good haircut not a
11stylist, just a haircut. Honestly my hubby does a better job than most - he even colors my hair.
Good idea, Bella!
12Slightly off topic, my hairstylist told me she hates when people bring in pictures of what they want, because most of the time those people leave disappointed. Not because she did a bad job, but because people have unrealistic expectations about their hair, and what it will do. She emphasizes that a picture may be a good starting point to give a general idea of what you're looking for, but unless you have the exact same hair texture as the picture, most likely the cut will look different on you. I, for example, have thin, straight hair with cow licks along the hairline, which is not usually what models/hair models are working with!
13Great idea, Bella
14I guess I've been lucky. I've had some yuck haircuts in my day, but I don't freak out, it's just hair and it grows out. I just moved to a new city and had the hardest time finding a salon that wasn't full of old ladies.
15I can see how people bringing in pictures could be rough for a stylist, people ALWAYS want what they can't have. So I always look online and make like a collage of like 10 different cuts (always with the same-ish texture as mine) and bring those in. Then they can look at a BUNCH of different cuts, see what I like about them, find the common denominator and do my hair that way. It's worked so far!
gosh, this just happened to me. can you go back & say WTF>!?
16I've had such bad luck with haircuts..This past weekend I was going to schedule an appointment to get a much-needed trim...but then I thought about having to pay $50 to be disappointed again. Thaaat's when I decided to just trim it myself. ha! It actually looks better than my last haircut...and I swear it's totally even!
17i love my stylist, but she always does my hair in a way that i would never recreate so i have no idea what my hair actually looks like leaving the salon!
18That's a really good idea! Every time I get my hair cut, it really looks the same.
19that's a good idea!
20im in school to become a hairstylist and there is nothing worse than a client who wants somthing they CANT have, some ppl just dont get it. we are all born with different hair types and some styles are just a big no-no for certain fad-wanting people out there. If you go to a good salon and really trust your gal (or guy)-This step is crutial- they will take care of you and you should trust thier oppinion. they want the best for you, that way you'll come back
So when we say NO those bangs or layers probably wont be good for you, just believe us. we dont want you walking aorund like that with our name on it
If you see someone anywhere, in the mall, ANYWHERE, and they have a nice cut or color ask
them who did thier hair and where they got it done.
#1 peice of advice- Find someone you like and go to her everytime- also pictures do help.
21I'd be too afraid of showing the stylist photos of bad hair cuts/styles that I DON'T want. If the stylist can't hear every word you said or did give you her/his undivided attention, they might think you were requesting the haircut to look like the photo.
I cut and color my own hair (inverted bob with tons of layers in the back). I also cut and color my sister's hair and cut my husband's hair. We haven't been disappointed with my own work yet.
22* DIDN'T (not did) give you his/her undivided attention. (Sorry.)
23speaking of hair..this may be a little off topic, but what is the best ceramic flat iron hair straightener? thanks!
24TOO SMART!
25will try that out next time!
thnx
I'm a cosmetology student and I have to say this is a really good idea. My best piece of advice is to just find a stylist who listens to you and go to them every time. It can really help.
26Have you noticed that there are an increasing amt of ppl walking around with really messed up hair cuts? This is due to the passive aggressive epidemic that is spreading throughout hair salons. If you have not gotten a hair cut, you may consider cutting your own hair…it will save you the physical and emotional trauma from these passive aggressive hair stylist. You can **never** identify a passive aggressive hair stylist. Never. They will be extremely friendly to you the whole time…this is to mask their anger/insecurities. But once they are done with your hair, you will be left with a hideous shag on purpose. You may even have to deal with split ends w/in days or weeks of your brand new cut, since he/she may be cruel enough to cut your hair with a dull pair of scissors to ensure you have to live w/ the do for a long time. We need to join force and boycot salons by cutting our own hair. These people are making a *****GOOD**** living taking their anger out on your hair. For those of you sporting a hair cut from a passive aggressive hair stylist, you are not alone, A LOT of people are too. But don’t forget what happened to you and don’t let another money hungry stylist convince you it was a mistake…it’s wasn’t. Spread the word, help others who have not been victimized!
