Superfine hair that falls flat every time you try to add a bit of texture to it can be a real pain, especially for those with high hair ambitions. But you don't have to suffer with limp, lackluster strands. There are things you can do to improve your style in a way that's specific for your hair type. Stylist Vanessa Fernandez from the Butterfly Studio Salon in New York City says that it's all about volume-centric products. "I always suggest washing the hair at night with a volumizing shampoo," she says. As for conditioner, only use a lightweight one, like Pantene Pro-V Fine Hair Solutions Volume Conditioner ($9).
For styling, Fernandez recommends a solid blow-dry as your base. "The trick is using a dollop of volumizing mousse, like Shu Uemura's Ample Angora ($38) and predrying the hair well," she says. Focus the mousse on your roots and not your ends to add volume instead of weight. Looking to add a little wave? Fernandez suggests braids. "Create three braids by splitting the hair into three sections: one on each side and the last one in the middle-back," she says. Braid each section and leave them in to form slightly beachy waves. "This helps create a base," Fernandez explains. This way, the extra texture is a great jumping off point for other styles, turning your less-than-lustrous locks into hair to envy.

Animal testing is on the ugly side of the beauty industry, and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is helping to make sure animal-free tests are being used on an international scale. PETA granted $33,000 to the Institute for In Vitro Sciences (IIVS), which is funding training for scientists in China, who are learning how to use an in vitro alternative to testing cosmetics on live rabbits.
Under Chinese law, cosmetic companies are required to test on animals. But this grant, the second given to IIVS, enables scientists at the Beijing Technical and Business University, China's largest university cosmetics science program, to be instructed in nonanimal testing methods. The Chinese government is set to approve its first in vitro test, which would affect animal testing throughout the country, and ultimately on a global scale. Sometimes they're naughty, sometimes they're nice, but Bond girls are always beautiful and seductive. The women can be toting guns with very little makeup in one scene or all dolled up for a glamorous night out in the next (and even at times a bit . . . ahem, disheveled). The film franchise celebrates 50 years with the release of Skyfall this week, and the newest women in 007's life are just as sultry as expected. Get tips to capture the classic beauty look from James Bond's many leading ladies past and present.

Once the colder weather hits, bolder lipstick becomes a makeup bag regular. Last night, the stars were ditching red lipstick for a new Fall color: purple. Naomie Harris and Rihanna went for rich bordeaux hues, while Bérénice Marlohe opted for a softer wine-stained look. You can try aubergine lips, too, with a bold lipstick like YSL Rouge Pur Couture Lipstick in Noir Laque or Rose Stiletto ($32), or you can go for a stain like CoverGirl Outlast Lipstain in Plum Pout ($8). Whether you have a fair or dark complexion, plush plum shades will make a glamorous statement.
Keira Knightley was a vision of classic beauty at the premiere of Anna Karenina last night. The actress's hair was styled in a sleek side part, which complemented her full brows and bold red lipstick. But it was her full, lush lashes that garnered the most attention, proving that defined bottom eyelashes are still on trend. "We wanted the look to be classic and beautiful," said Chanel celebrity makeup artist Kate Lee.
To achieve the eye look, Lee swept on Laura Mercier Caviar Eyeliner in Navy ($22) and then blended Chanel Quadra Eyeshadow in Lagons ($58) to extend the line. For the long, flirty lashes, Lee applied two coats of Le Volume de Chanel Mascara in Noir ($30, available Nov. 13) after curling. For the doll-like lower lashes Keira wears so well, hold your mascara wand vertically and apply the pigment in downward strokes. This eye makeup and lipstick pairing is perfect for holiday partying and looks classic on everyone.
