When researching and preparing for the film, Montagna and Berger looked at photographs and through research books to study Hitchcock's facial structure and shape. "We also managed to obtain an actual lightcast of Hitchcock, so we could get a sense of what he looked like in three-dimension," Montagna said.
The key, though, wasn't to make Hopkins look exactly like the director. "We did a lot of research in the sense of looking at Hitchcock as our leaping off point and retrofitting his look onto Tony — yet not disguising Tony so you didn't lose him or inhibit him from his performance," Berger explained.
