Whether you're feeling the effects of the lousy economy or not, it never hurts to save money. This week, I'll be bringing you a series called Recession-Proof Beauty. Expect money-saving tips on looking your best, including do-it-yourself treatments, cheap-chic products, and general advice for looking like a million bucks... even if you're counting every penny.
To start things off, I thought I'd tell you about the aspirin mask, a skin-softening, acne-fighting treatment that costs only a few cents. It's simple, cheap, and effective. Use it as an exfoliating paste, or leave it on your skin for about five minutes as a mask. Either way, you should see brighter, softer skin with less dullness. (That's because the effective ingredient in aspirin is chemically similar to salicylic acid, which helps exfoliate skin.)
For the super-simple aspirin mask "recipe," read more.
You will need:
- Four or five aspirin pills. They must be uncoated, plain aspirin; Advil, Aleve, Tylenol, and the like won't work.
- A tablespoon or two of lukewarm water
- Honey or plain yogurt (optional)
Mix the aspirin with just enough water to make a paste. If you want a thicker mask, add a dollop of honey; if you prefer a more soothing mask, some plain yogurt can do the trick. Apply the mask in a thin layer on your face, then allow it to dry. Remove it by rubbing in gentle circular motions.
Please note: Some people are allergic to aspirin, so try a patch test on your forearm before spreading this all over your face.

RE: aspirin allergy - if I'm able to take aspirin for headaches and the like, is there still a chance I could be allergic to it topically? I'd never considered that.
Great tip!
1I might have to try this...
2Hkdkat, you would probably be fine, but I always recommend doing patch tests. Better safe than sorry, right?
3Yes the economy sucks right know,i just love the u.s.a I hope nothing serious happens.....But,isn't it if you spend more money better for the economy instead of yourself?
4I use an aspirin mask once or twice a week with honey and it makes my skin feel so soft! Sometimes I mix in some tea tree oil and/or mint julip mask, too. Looking forward to the rest of this series!
5I've been doing this for years, it really does work!
p.s. if you don't put honey or yogurt in it, it'll flake off when it dries
6Cool! I love the recession-proof beauty idea for a series.
7wow interesting.am going to try it
8Huh...I never would've thought. And I know this sounds kind of silly, but this would be a good way to get rid of painkillers. I always end up buying a jar every year or so, but I end up only taking maybe 4 or 5 out of a jar before it expires. I guess I'll get my money's worth this way?
9How long do I leave it on?
Also, I'm down with generic aspirin, the stuff I have now is bright orange. Is that gonna stain my face?
10I heard of this, and when I was 11 I got a nasty pimple when visiting relatives. I asked my grandma if she had any aspirin, and crushed some up into a spot treatment for the pimple. I had extra so I spread it all over my face. When I came out of the bathroom, my family in the living room stared at me for a few seconds and I got embarrassed and went back to the bathroom to wash it off.
11Recession proof beauty sounds right up my alley! I've got to try this one of these days...
12This is a great quick easy mask. I love it.
13Definitely mix it with something (not just water) it gets super powdery in about a minute and you'll have aspirin powder EVERYWHERE!
That said, I've tried this with so-so results. A sugar or salt scrub works better for me.
14I have never heard this before! I'm going to give it a whirl for sure. I have heard of putting hydrogen peroxide in bath water to detoxify. I have never tried that but it makes perfect sense!
15You have my attention...keep them coming!
16It really is quite an effective masque. But I find it hard to know how many to use. The first time, I think I kinda overdid it, because my face got very red afterwards.
17I highly suggest doing a patch test before coating your entire face. I now have an unsightly rash along my smile lines since using the aspirin mask and it is taking quite sometime to clear up.
18in addition to using it as a mask, you can add a little more water and just use it as a scrub. in addition, for those of us whose skin is dryer, stead of adding yogurt or honey, add a few drops of olive oil. you'll get the softness, you'll get clean pores, and with the OO, you'll get moisture. definitely a keeper!
19I swear every time I use this I get comments on my skin. It makes me look glowy and my pores are non-existent. Mind you they are quite small to begin with. But it really is a miracle spot treatment for pimples.
20I also have been doing this for some time. Mixing the aspirin with the product specific to your skin type to make your emusion is key and it can be quite drying so once a week for most people is often enough. Also mixing it with milk and using it just as a wash is great. Powdered milk in a bath...skin baby soft.
21Interesting.. Aspirin is naturally anti-inflammatory, so in theory, putting it on inflamed skin would work as well as taking one for your headaches. Headaches are really just constrictions of the blood vessels in your head, you know.
22I've heard good stuff about this. Some people mix the aspirin mask with different things like honey. I still haven't tried it yet but I will someday...
23I do it with the honey. Fabulous.
24I do it with honey as well! But instead of using water to make the paste, I use witch hazel. Then I add the honey to make sure it sticks to my face.
25Wow never heard of this...I think I may try it!!
26I have try all kinds of exfoliators and when I tried the aspirin mask it made my face soft and smooth. I now use it twice a week. I'll try it with the olive oil instead of honey next time.
27i love the idea of this series.. there's gotta be more DIY beauty stuff that we can do!
28thank you!
29aspirin also helps heal keloids and a lot of other skin conditions
next time i have an acne issue i will look into this...
30I used to have acne and -- holy crap -- it actually factually works.
31i promise i have tried them all & this mask is still one of my favs & clearly the least expensive!
32I'm really excited to try this! I'm headed to the corner store right after work!! Can't wait for the next one.
33I have never tried this as a mask, but will testify to its greatness of removing a pimple in as little as 2 days. It takes the redness out, the soreness is gone in a day, and the pimple is usually gone the next day. Works really well even on the ones you squeeze - keeps them from becoming awful looking (infected.) I have never mixed it with anything, just plain Bayer and water. Do be cautious because it will return to powder within a few minutes and it will burn if it gets into your eyes. Another hint, cover the affected area with a small bandage to keep the powder there longer (like overnight.) This works better than any topical cream that I have ever purchased!!
34Yah I have done this for years- I love it....
35yeah i'm going to try this tonight just hope i don't have any problems!
36Never done it before ... but I am deathly allergic to asprin (ended up in the hospital twice cuz of my allergies)
37kinda terrified to try it on my skin ...
great tip....I will try it out.
