What's the Worst Hair Advice You've Ever Received?

Earlier, I asked you about the worst makeup advice and the worst skincare advice you've ever received. Now I'm asking you about your hair. My worst hair advice came from a former stylist, who promised mauve highlights around my fringe. Sounded cool, but all I got was a faded, dull chunk of pink front and center. It did not do wonders for my complexion.

So whether it was some counsel on extensions that eventually went wrong, ill-advised layering that made your hair go limp, or some "wonder" concoction you rubbed into your tresses, tell us all about it in the comments below. I once got talked into getting a perm at a crappy place in mexico, when i walked out of there I was 20 dollars lighter and had dreadlocks looking things on my head, once across the border I was talked into a second perm, that same day! Needless to say I did the rihanna thing to keep the hair that didnt bake off on my hair. My hair was so fried that it turns blonde all by itself, mind you I have naturally auburn hair

My Mom's best friend was a stylist, and my freshman year in high school I wanted a spiral perm. My hair was naturally wavy, and about an inch past my shoulders, but she piggy back rolled it (2 perm rods on each section of hair). I had poodle curls, and my hair shrank up to my chin. It was HORRIBLE! I washed it immediately after getting home, and that loosened it up a little, but it took almost the whole year to grow out.

well.....let's see.....I had an Afro in the 70s (I'm Caucasian) In the 80s, I let my barber boyfriend buzz cut my hair.

when i used to get perms from the age of 12 till i got pregnant and got one an tottally ruind my hair i was pregnant i dyed it to an it fell off my uncles wife rene did it an she suposedly a hairdresser but i later learn she worked for my aunt linda an did bad jobs she fired her !!! but after that i had to get so many hair cuts to bring it baclk to life an its still limp i wanna cry

GOD so I was a bit of a tomboy growing up with no fashion direction aside from t-shirts and jeans and my outdated Mom was my source of knowledge. Like she would take me clothes shopping and to get haircuts, but it was an unfortunate case of the outdated leading the clueless. When I was 13 my Mom told the lady cutting my hair "I think she would look so pretty with feathers!" FEATHERS. I didn't know what that meant ... mind you it was 1996, not 1976, and I was a chubby Indian girl. So, the opposite of Farrah Fawcett. Awful. Oh so god awful.

that after dying my hair black for over a hair, it would be fine to go platinum! Needless to say my long locks went short! My black hair went red since blond was not in my destiny at that point!

Someone advised me to get a blunt fringe. Yea, didn't work out at all. Another hairdresser 'layered' it so it won't be so thick. Also, I was forced to get a pixie cut once and I ended up looking like a boy.

"Dirty hair grows faster so if you want to grow your hair, wash it like once every few months" so says a girl whose own hair was closer to her scalp than 99 is to 100 (okay I am exaggerating).

I was told I would look nice with a short inverted bob, and straight across bangs. Worst. Idea. Ever. My hair is super thick and wavy. This look did not work for me. I looked like a boy. This was last year. It has grown back a lot since then, but my once straight across bangs messed up my whole hair, and I'm still trying to grow them out. Needless to say, I never went back.

I've been to the same hairdresser since I started growing hair. When you find something that works, stick with it. Which is why my worst hair advice is from a friend who suggested I get a trim with her at a chain salon down the street from our college. Being a ways away from home and on a college friendly budget I agreed, because I needed it. I spent about 45 minutes in a chair where a very nice, yet very distressed Jamaican woman explained to me (through tears) that her bird had just died-( I was now the only one who would listen to her sorrows). This, while she was yanking a comb through my dry, very thick curly hair with Paul Mitchell Skinny serum ( a wash was supposed to be included) I really did feel bad for her, but the next week I attended a style event hosted by a world class salon, where I was called out of the the audience by a stylist and told I had really beautiful curls. "But I bet you didn't want that hair cut did you?" I left feeling even worse for my hair.

Oh god. In the early eighties, I was rocking Billy Idol spikes for a while. My then stylist talked me into bleaching my blond hair platinum and adding several black streaks "for fun." It wasn't, and took several painful months to grow out.

When I was 12 I went to a hairdresser/stylist who took decided I had the spirit to carry a wide 1/2 mohawk so it's was only about 2inches on one side, spiked bangs and the back cut short with bluish squares. She was able to tell all this because I said I loved Fishbone, when asked my fave band. Now while my "spirit" might have been a bit punky my outer layer dressed by Mom was pure pop. When she was done and spun me around to face the mirror. I just cried. It took the entire year to get it back to my shoulder.

i did the opposite of a perm: i chemically straightened my naturally curly hair...it didn't work, for one, it just made my ringlets look like questionnable curls, and it made my hair so unhealthy that a 2 inch patch at the crown just broke off so it was like a little buzzcut i was about 15 and spent so much of my hardearned babysitting money on it...i ended up going back and getting a refund and a deep conditioning because they totally misled me - they gave me the impression that i would have straight how straight out of the shower everyday without ever having to blowdry or use a hairstraightener...lies

I had to cut it all off, and that started my period of short hair (which lasted for 10 years).During the last three years, I finally grew my hair out. It's mid-back length, and at last, I finally have my long, straight hair back.

After botching the pink streaks she put in my hair, my 14 Y/O best friend tried to "fix" it by bleaching the parts she didn't mean to dye. With hydrogen peroxide. My dirty blond hair looked like someone spilled pink and yellow paint on it, and then taken a weed whacker to it. To hide the weird lengths, I took her second piece of bad advice, and mini-braided all my hair..... The damage took me three years to grow out.

If you want a pixie cut, cut it off yourself or you'll be mad at whoever you had asked to cut it. Fast forward to later that night, my 15 year old self in the bathroom with scissors cutting all of my hair off. I looked like a patient in a mental health ward.
