Are you constantly reapplying your lip balm, because no matter how much you put on, your lips just dry out again five minutes later? It could be that you're experiencing a lip balm ingredient to avoid. Many lip balms have ingredients that actually dry your lips out or have other negative properties. To find out whether your favorite gloss has a deal-breaker additive, just read more.
- Menthol, camphor, and phenol: All three of these ingredients give your lips a deceptive soothing, cooling sensation — but they also dry them out, creating a vicious cycle where you apply your lip balm to get relief . . . from your lip balm.
- Silicone oil: This additive is put in balms, glosses, and lipsticks to make them last longer and keep pigment from rubbing off your lips. It also, however, locks out moisture.
- Fragrance: Some fragrance groups, especially when combined with ingredients like alcohol, can suck the moisture right off your lips.
- Salicylic acid: This is a great acne-fighting ingredient, and it definitely exfoliates well, but in lip glosses and balms it can dry your lips and make them peel — not a pretty combo.

noooooooo... burt's bee's has menthol, and it's my favorite!
1All my favorite lip balms are mint
2Coola lip balm is certified organic, and they have a peppermint balm
It's got
peppermint oil in it instead of menthol.
3I've run into a few of these things...and I get made fun of by others in my family for buying several of the same kind of chapstick...because it works the best.
4YEAH both of my lip balms do not have these ingredients.
5So.. what lip balm should I be buying instead? I've been searching for a good one for forever! =(
6Mint isn't good for your lips, either. Peppermint especially is a skin (and lip) irritant. As a chemist, I have always been incredibly confused by how many brands put these substances in their lip balms!
7that's funny I just bought a new lip balm today! Luckily it has none of these ingredients. Totally organic and natural!!
8eos lipbalm in honeydew honeysuckle is the best!!! its an odd egg shape but the best lip balm Ive come across so far.
9Burt's Bees is the best lip balm I've ever used and always fixes my chapped lips overnight - and it has menthol.
10I don't see any Menthol in Burts BeesHoney Lip Balm...
11I just found out I am allergic to one of my Burt's Bee's. I have just resorted to using Vaseline. My lips would swell up and look like a collagen injection gone wrong
12collagen injections always go wrong lol
13Yayyy none of my two lip balms have any of these ingredients! They're both Lush ones and they're absolutely great!
flowergirl, you should try "Chocolate WhipStick" by Lush, it's my all time favourite balm, and it has never ever let me down! And it smells absolutely yummy!

Yay! My lip glosses are okay!
15oh no..Palmer's cocoa butter has parfum plus Benzyl alcohol
16But i love the smell so much!
I always thought that some companies might do something like this to keep people purchasing their product...here's proof positive.
I had a CVS Chap-Block Lip Balm with spearmint flavor...it has Silicone Oil in it...go figure.
17@joanna89... I was about to comment the same thing! I can't stop using it though, I will just try to take better care of my lips in other ways so I can keep my Burt's Bee's
