Some rose fragrances can be overly sweet, hitting the nose with the grace and subtlety of a $2 polyester bloom from Speedway. But a well-crafted, balanced, sumptuous rose scent is something to behold. Portrait of a Lady ($200–$300), crafted by perfumers Frédéric Malle and Dominique Ropion, falls into the latter category. Turkish rose essence mixes with notes of cassis, clove, cinnamon, patchouli, and musk to create a beautiful (and aptly named) oriental fragrance. Put it on your Valentine's Day wish list if you've been a very, very good woman.
