Scar Creams: Help a Reader Out!

This post comes to us from the Problem Solved group, where member Jaime not Jamie asked for some beauty advice.

Last week, I had surgery on my neck. I'm grateful that it was nothing serious, but I'm left with a scar that's a little over an inch long. Kudos to my surgeon for making such a small incision, but since the mark is on such a visible part of my body, I want to make sure that I do everything I can to help it heal nicely. Do any of you have experience with scar creams, vitamins, or any home remedies? I'd really appreciate the advice!

For me, the best scar treatment is invicible scars. I used 3 different scar treatments and the results invicible showed were all that i was waiting for so long. It helped me heal my scars so perfectly.I don't like the flashy packaging though

After my surgery my doctor told me to use Contractubex. It worked really well for me! :)

EGYPTIAN MAGIC! This stuff is fairly expensive, but it's so versatile, you'll find a hundred uses for it in no time. It's amazing; my mom had surgery on her knee and it cleared up most of the reddish tinge altho there is a slight bump still residing there.

I tried Bio-Oil but couldn't really see any results, probably because I didn't use it consistently enough. But lots of women say it's really good.

I had surgery on my next too. The plastic surgeon that closed the incision told me that the only thing clinically proven to prevent keloiding and improve the looks of the scar is silicone strips. you can buy them online. They must be worn all day unless you are in the shower. I kept mine in with a bandaid or skin color surgical tape.

I have a tendency to scar poorly so I was worried when I had to have a rather extensive surgery. Afterward, the doctor told me to rub Vitamin E cream on the scars twice a day (to break down the scar tissue and to make them flatter) and, when it was fully healed, to use Scargard (you can get it for approx. $20 in CVS). It's a similar consistency to nail polish and you brush it on once a day. I did that religiously for a month and my scars are almost invisible. I swear by Scargard for any type of scar. It really does work!!

Keeping out of the sun is really important, too. I don't know about sunscreen, but just try to avoid the sun and use an umbrella etc

I second Mederma, it takes awhile but it does work and most important, use sun screen. Good luck.

Vitamin E cream! I had thyroid surgery in junior high and used Vitamin E to prevent scarring; it works pretty well. I used liqui-gels that I poked and squeezed the gel out of, not sure if that's more potent. And be sure to always put sunscreen on the spot moving forward!

Just FYI, smoking impairs healing and thins the skin. So, try to avoid it while you are healing!

I'm with ACM1014 on this one... Mederma helped my scars a lot. Comes in both an ointment and cream, but definately keep it moisturized while its healing then use a product like mederma or bio-oil. They may make your scars itch as if your healing a wound, because you are. I had one scar that was re-injured when it was healing, and overproduced scar tissue and had a really big keloid, i read about some solutions and asked my doctor about cortisone shots. He said that it is known to reduce scar tissue and it sure did, it's crazy how something so big that can stick out of your skin will actually shrink and flatten, best solution i had for the worst scar i ever had.

Aloe Vera. We have a aloe vera plant in our yard and whenever we have a scar we cut a piece off the plant and rub it on our skin, it works great.

Hey, I also rec Bio Oil, and I love the smell. I also have had good results with Scar On, I think its called, the same line that does Head On. Both work about the same for me.

My hubby had surgery a year ago and we used vaseline and vitamin E oil on his scars. They now are two flat- smooth white marks on his skin. I had a pretty bad burn on my wrist from the oven and made the mistake of exposing it to the sun while gardening and it's an ugly dark pink scar still six months later. I really think sun screen is a must!

I should have included this earlier... you can buy e-oil in a little bottle, usually located in the vitamin section, but if you don't see it then popping the little capsules open works just fine too.

I'm with Betty Wayne on Vitamin E oil. Get the capsules that you ingest orally with the highest percentage (I think it's 400), pop them open, and apply it directly to the scar twice a day once it has already healed. Until it heals make sure to use Neosporin frequently and keep it covered.

Vaseline works as well as mederma. The most important thing is keep it moist, so keep the vaseline or aquaphor slathered on to minimize scars and promote healing.

Bio-oil fan here too. I hate the smell though, too lavendery for me. But it helped with the scars a lot. They were pink, but now skin colour. I used it for two weeks and already saw the results.

VITAMIN E OIL!!! I was in a very serious car accident and (not to gross you out) had 1/3 of the skin on my face scraped off (sorry to gross you out). Today I have three tiny scars on my face, two of which only I notice and one of which is about the size of a pea and rarely noticed by other people. Also used E oil when I was pregnant- rubbed it on my belly and boobs once a day and I have no stretch marks. I googled it and some people say it works and some say it doesn't and some people have an allergic reaction to it, but I completely owe my scar-less face and stretch-mark-free body to it. I swear by it and always will.

I had a sports related injury and had to have 12 stitches on my forehead. I used Mederma religiously after the stitches were out and the scar faded almost completely. Hope that helps!

Bio-Oil worked very well for me. I'm terribly accident-prone and I develop raggedy, keloid scars and this really helps for me. Good luck!

Jamie....The best thing to do is use a moisturizer cream. You don't have to use expensive scar creams.....it's all about the massage. I worked for a plastic surg. and she also recommended silicone sheeting(CVS Walgreens etc...) it will help reduce the puffiness and the silicone can be washed and reused. It can take up to 6 months to see your final result so don't loose hope. Remember to always wear sunscreen on your face and neck especially on the scar.

I've had two open incision surgeries so I've had my time with dealing with scarring. The best thing to do right after surgery/stitching is to leave the area alone and stay out of the sun. Each doctor said that the sun will turn the scar red/pink, instead of a color similar to your skin. From experience, I have to say that this is very reliable advice. However, I don't have any product recommendations, since I never used any for my scars. Sorry.

I discovered a great product called Kelocote you can get online that really really helped with a jagged scar on my torso. Seems expensive at $30-something for a tube but lasts forever. I develop keloids (big bumpy ugly scars) and it really smoothed things out. Also, use a TON of sunscreen the next 12 months.
