'80s Crimping Irons Make a Comeback at Betsey Johnson

Sep 12 2012 - 9:43am

Betsey Johnson [1] is a one-of-a-kind character, and in her Spring 2013 retrospective show, her models followed suit. Betsey celebrated her 70th birthday with the help of Cyndi Lauper and a look back at her vintage designs. And the beauty look was just as whimsical as you'd expect. See what happens when you mix Betsey Johnson hair with Cindy Crawford [2]'s mole and Jessica Rabbit's lipstick.

The look: Fish-eye eyeliner, crimped hair, and sparkling red nails (and matching lips).
The inspiration: American icons, pin-up girls, and cartoons.
Who would wear it: Betsey Johnson.

"Our inspiration was Betsey herself because her hair epitomizes her personality," said Aveda lead hairstylist Jon Reyman. "Betsey is a party." And what better way to evoke that fun feeling than classic '80s crimps?

The team used Control Force Hair Spray [4] ($26) to set the hair in a strong zigzag pattern during the crimping process. And before models walked out on the runway, stylists used their fingers to tousle and break up the wave.

"The makeup is very dramatic, very pop art," said Maybelline [5] key makeup artist Gato. "From far away it looks like a cat eye, but up close it is more fish eye, like a cartoon."

The team used the Master Precise Ink Pen Eyeliner [6] ($8) to fill in eyebrows and draw the fish-eye design. Then, they mixed the Too Cool (white) and Audacious Asphalt (metallic silver) shades of the Color Tattoo Cream Gel Shadow [7] ($7 each) and applied them on the outer and inner thirds of the eyes. A dab of yellow pigment in the center brought it all together.

For the lips, artists applied red glitter on top of lipstick. Then, gloss was added on top of that. For the final touch came a dramatic blue diamond mole.

Lead manicurist Gina Edwards with ImPress Press-On Manicure rounded about 300 nails to prepare for the Betsey Johnson [8] showcase. Every model got a set of the medium-length nails, topped with two coats of ruby glitter polish (to match the lips, of course).
