Beverly Johnson Interview

Life (and Beauty) Lessons Learned From Supermodel Beverly Johnson

Beverly Johnson is known as the first Black woman to cover Vogue in 1974, but surprisingly she says that is not her greatest accomplishment. That honor is reserved for her entrepreneurial efforts. Her expertise in the fashion industry, along with her deep interest in beauty, is coming together in her Beverly Johnson beauty line.

“There’s just something about building something and seeing something come to fruition that is really gratifying and life-reaffirming,” she admits. “I feel 20 years old because of all the enthusiasm and passion and purpose in what I’m doing right now.” Learn more about Beverly’s latest endeavor, her life lessons, and her beauty beliefs when you continue reading.

From her modeling days, Beverly felt there was a need for more multicultural beauty offerings. So within her 11-product hair care line, she strives to serve all textures from thin to kinky — and there are even weave ponytails. The collection, available at Frederick’s of Hollywood, also includes skin care. “People want to have good skin and great hair without paying attention to it, and that’s not gonna happen,” she explains. “You have to pay attention, and I think that for skin cleansing is key.” Beverly admits that she spends up to 30 minutes every night buffing and moisturizing with the latest creams and gadgets. (Not surprisingly, she still looks flawless at 59.)

Beverly attributes her perseverance in the industry — we're talking over 40 years of staying power — to her self-motivation and relentless attitude. “No one really makes it alone, but I really take homage knowing that I can depend on myself,” she said. “Give the ball to me, pass it over here. Because I’m not going to let myself down.”
