Due to the popularity of TV shows like Mad Men and Boardwalk Empire, we've wholeheartedly embraced vintage makeup tricks in our daily routines. A whole range of eras and stars has served for inspiration, from Clara Bow to Sophia Loren. But would you paint your face like a zombie in the name of retro beauty?

Turns out, there were some crazy makeup color guidelines in the early days of film. The old-time image (below) has been floating around Reddit for the past few days, but we couldn't fathom it without a modern-day counterpart. Thanks to Reddit user immortalbeloved, we can now see what the techniques look like when put to the test. She looks gorgeous in the black and white shot, but you're in for a surprise when you see the color photo: blue undereyes, gold lips, and lilac contouring.
