Jul 8 2014 - 4:00pm

Due to the popularity of TV shows like Mad Men [1] and Boardwalk Empire, we've wholeheartedly embraced vintage makeup tricks [2] in our daily routines. A whole range of eras and stars has served for inspiration, from Clara Bow to Sophia Loren. But would you paint your face like a zombie in the name of retro beauty?

Turns out, there were some crazy makeup color guidelines in the early days of film. The old-time image (below) has been floating around Reddit for the past few days, but we couldn't fathom it without a modern-day counterpart. Thanks to Reddit user immortalbeloved [3], we can now see what the techniques look like when put to the test. She looks gorgeous in the black and white shot, but you're in for a surprise when you see the color photo: blue undereyes, gold lips, and lilac contouring. We're sure that today's celebrities are glad that cameras have greatly evolved — we can only imagine how much film was wasted from pointing and giggling during each take.
