Should Guyliner Be Banned?

At the end of last month, a 13-year old boy was told by school officials in Hamilton, OH that he needed to remove his black lipstick and eye liner because his makeup was "extreme and distracting." The boy, Matt, didn't see it that way, saying, "I don't find this distracting at all." His mom felt that the school system was being discriminatory. But administrators claimed that the same rules apply for girls wearing excessive makeup. Do you think the school was right in singling him out? Or should Matt be able to flaunt his WentzPentz with pride?

so many scary, sexist replies. guys cant wear makeup-- why??... for the same reason women werent allowed to vote or wear pants? get over it. it sounds to me like many females are threatened by guys who wear makeup. if you identify your gender with a certain fashion look, then you must be terrified if it turns out that some guys can wear makeup or clothes better than you. and if they can do it, then what else do you have to prove that you're a "real" woman? My point- stop generalizing and limiting other people just because you have issues with your own gender identity. Relax darlings, it's just makeup. /signed a female who thinks that guyliner rocks.

If the girls are allowed to wear make-up at the school then guys should too, but if the girls aren't then guys shouldn't either.

Out of all the things that school kids can do to get in trouble.... is this really that harmful? Pick your battles. If it isnt hurting anyone, let it be.

chasingjamie, that's exactly what I think.It's still not really a legitimate reason to tell him to take it off; I honestly did not think it was that extreme.It's not like the black was caked on his lips, like I've seen so many little "goth/emo" 12 year old girls, you know?Also, props to the mom for sticking by her kid! Most mothers would probably be like "Just wipe the damn make-up off, you look like a girl."Ellenora, I agree with you on the clean-shaven, neat and not made-up guy. :]

Freddie Mercury in the '70s made it look hot. But then again I'm biased.I don't find it attractive on guys, but that's more to do with what I like in men than any biases.

It's what the mother says at the end of the video that really makes a difference: the school has students where badges that proclaim "ACCEPTANCE" as a motto, and ask students "Do you value the uniqueness of others?" Is the school asking him to remove his makeup because it's distracting or because they don't like his "goth" look as a boy?

No, it is totally discriminatory and it smacks of when my mother wasn't allowed to wear pants to school. It wasn't even in class that he was told to remove it, so how could that administrator know that it was distracting. The truth is that it made that administrator uncomfortable I totally disagree with you on this one msmoney23. This reminds me of my mother's mother crusading to make it possible for her daughter to wear pants. It reminds me of when my friend Lily was discriminated against because a sliver of her tummy was showing. She happened to be the tallest girl in school and they really didn't make Junior's shirts that covered her whole tummy. Coincidentally shorter less buxom girls were allowed to wear shirts that showed three or more inches of midriff. Her mom stuck up for her. In High School my mom stuck up for me when points were taken off of an academic presentation because the teacher thought I hadn't put an effort into my outfit, but I was wearing the nicest clothes we could afford, all clean and freshly ironed. It is a parent's job to stand by their child when they are unfairly treated especially during teenage years which are hard enough already, and I am thankful I knew those types of moms in high school.

This is stupid, the kid is 13 for crying out loud! There will be alot more serious issues to come along the way other than this one. It looks like a story about a mom trying to make a big deal out of a insignificant one, I remember those types of moms when I was in highschool :OY:

It doesn't bother me whether a guy wears eyeliner or not. But if girls at the school are told not to wear excessive make-up, then the guys shouldn't either. So in my opinion the decision is fair. I don't think they are being discriminatory, I think that they are just exercising their general rule.

I remember in middle school, I put my guy friend's long hair into a ponytail, and the administrator stopped him and demanded that he take it down otherwise he would be suspended.

Personally I don't really like makeup on a man, however I also wouldn't tell them not to wear it. I don't think I've ever seen someone go up to a woman and say "gee wow you really don't know how to put on makeup, its really distracting!" Many women wear bright red lipstick everyday and we don't tell them to wear nothing, why is this different? Yes I know its a guy, but still, most women I know would be really mad if someone told her what makeup to wear who wasn't specifically asked about it(makeup artist, best friend, etc).

Do I think guys look sexy wearing cosmetics? No. Personally, I'm one of those girls who likes their men with no make-up, neat and clean-shaven. Do I think it should be banned? Not necessarily. My opinion is this--as long as it doesn't pose a threat to others or themselves, it should be allowed. That doesn't mean we have to like it (please, who can really walk correctly with their pants dropping below the ass?). I lived the really awful strict appearance at school (strict uniform length, ugly scratchy uniforms, no make-up including chapstick and lipgloss, no nail polish, no high heels, one piercing in each ear, stud earrings only, etc). It was stifling, in my opinion. I was so happy when I was transferred out of that school.

To be honest - it's not all that exciting. There's definitely nothing distracting about what he's wearing, it's just normal (and rather inexpertly applied!) makeup. So what? My teachers didn't ban me from wearing bright purple lipstick (paired with classy blue eyshadow!) to school, and I'm willing to bet that's even more distracting than a monochrome look. I think it's just adults who need to work on their own personal prejudices.

I think it looks really stupid, but I so do a lot of things. It shouldn't be banned and they should let him wear it. But I don't think it is a big enough issue to do a CNN report on it. Seriously that 13 year old will probably look back on this and be like "WHAT THE HECK WAS I THINKING?"
