There's been so much in the news lately about formalin and formaldehyde in Brazilian Blowout solution that it seems like everybody and their mother is pulling out of the treatment.

Not so, though, according to today's New York Times. Instead of getting rid of the treatments, some salons have just moved them out into the open air to reduce fumes (no word on how that'll work when it snows in New York). One salon has even gone so far as to have its employees and clients wear gas-mask-like respirators while the procedure is going on.

Most of you said you would not try the treatment, but if these types of precautions were taken, would you reconsider?

I actually got the treatment done after first doing some reading and research on it. It does say that the amount of chemicals used depends on the type of hair. That's why the FDA can't approve it bc the amount used isn't regulated. My stylist used some at the bowl while my hair was wet and then later after blowdrying. She said her eyes burned some but I was fine. Maybe it was due to the fact that she didn't use too much at once but spaced it out? She's willingly to have her eyes burn and possibly harm herself while knowing the risks, just as I did.

I've had my Brazilian straightening done not-so-long ago, in NY, and I can assure people no gas masks were involved, the treatment didn't cause any health problems, and the entire procedure was done inside a salon. I've also had 2 other friends do the treatment and had no issues with it. The only issue with it was a little stinging in my eye (due to fumes), but that last for about only 5 minutes or so. Anyway people need to research ahead of time, call the salons, find out percentage of formaldehyde, ask about ventilation, etc. I can only speak for the salon I went to in NY, but I don't think Brazilian straightening is some sort of death sentence people make it out to be. Personally, I would rather do this treatment rather than say Japanese straightening or even bleaching my hair.

I would still get the brazilian keratin treatment because the results on curly hair are just phenomenal. :)

Bella needs to get their information straight! http://www.brazilianblowout.com/new-press Apparently OSHA has admitted that their test was faulty. On Brazilian Blowout's fb page BB has announced their suit against OSHA for the false claims....this may only be the beginning as their are many news stations and editorial sites that have posted false information. There are a few salons in Los Angeles that have purchased and are using the chemical source capture system to remove irratants from the air while the service is being done:)

If you have to wear "gas-mask-like respirators" while getting a treatment done....probably not a good sign.

I would not wear a gas mask. However I love, love, love my blowout treatment and will continue to get it as long as its offered.

I thought about getting the bkt not to colpleatly straighten but to soften my hair curls. But after I learned the dangers of it i would never get ti done, even with precastuons like gas masks, which proves how toxic it really is. I would never use a treatment the could put the healthy of my hair much less my own physical health at jeprody. I would only consider it in the futture if it was reformulated and had absolutley no health risks, eg I'm talkingabout safe enough to injest a small quanity with no harm.
