Women with long hair can attest to the fact that more hair doesn't necessarily mean better hair. When you have lots of length to work with, styling can be more hassle than it's worth — think hours of blow-drying, curling, and pinning. Well, it's time to get out of your hair rut for the holidays! You can do more than the simple down 'do and the bad-hair-day ponytail. We've gathered our favorite red carpet moments to give long-haired ladies a jolt. Braids, buns, half-up looks, and sideswept styles can all be found within. Your ponytail holder is definitely going to get jealous this holiday season.
With Elizabeth Banks and Reese Witherspoon stepping out last night with similar blond bobs and makeup looks, we were seeing double. Elizabeth attended the Legoland tree-lighting ceremony with a festive red lipstick and shimmering shadow, while her hair was styled with a slight wave. Reese also went for a crimson lip at the Children's Defense Fund Beat the Odds Awards, but her shade was more brick than bright. Her newly shorn bob was blown out for a smooth, sleek look. These two could pass for twins, but who pulled off the look best?
Carrie Underwood took to the small screen last night as Maria in The Sound of Music, and instantly, her braided updo became one of our favorite things! But, we've got plenty of other inspiration on the classic milkmaid braid style. Alice + Olivia featured the braided style during its Fall 2013 show at New York Fashion Week with oversize plaits and red lips. And we've even spotted Katy Perry — in an Alice + Olivia ensemble, no less! — sporting milkmaid braids and red lips.
The trick to wearing the style in cooler weather is keeping it slick and neat. While the braids of Spring and Summer tend to be a little more on the tousled and wispy side, Fall's braids require a bit more upkeep. To keep things looking slick, spritz your hands with a strong-hold hairspray, like Rusk Strong Hold Shaping and Control Hairspray ($14), and run them over the braids to tame flyaways. You'll have instant milkmaid braids in a snap, whether you are headed to the Alps or a holiday party.
Although our heads explode every time Kate Middleton's hair makes an appearance, she had a surprisingly different 'do at the premiere of Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. Kate actually swept her headline-making mane into a loose yet gorgeous ponytail. Instead of the sleek, slicked-back ponytails we tend to see on the red carpet, Kate's was elegantly loose and accented with a black velvet ribbon. Is this a sign that Kate is pushing the envelope with her red carpet styles? We're not sure, but it's definitely not stopping us from looking at her royal ponytail from all angles.
There's more to Kelly Osbourne's topknot than initially meets the eye. The star pulled her hair up into a high bun for the Make-a-Wish Gala in Los Angeles last night and added a spiked hair accessory just above the nape of her neck. She kept her makeup pretty classic with winged eyeliner and nude lipstick, although we wouldn't go so far as to call her purple braid a classic. The shade is actually more like Pantone's 2014 Color of the Year, radiant orchid, making Kelly's signature hair hue ahead of the trend. See more shots of her tough-girl style from all angles!
Kate Middleton is the woman we want to be when it comes to hair. Even though she's had a whirlwind year so far (having a baby and all), Kate's blowouts have never fallen flat. We have had plenty of opportunities to see her hair on parade, like her ponytail snapped above at the premiere of Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. We're taking a look back at Kate's crowning glory: her enviable mane.

Even though Gravity has already debuted in the States, Sandra Bullock has been out promoting the film in Tokyo this week. For the press conference, she wore her hair straight down with a middle part framing her face. Then, she switched it up for the red carpet premiere, wearing an updo with curled fringe in the front. For both looks, she kept her makeup soft with metallic shadows on her lids and a nude lip. She looked great for both appearances, but which of Sandra's styles do you like best?
We've been obsessing over Julianne Hough's many beauty looks for awhile now, and her versatile long bob is one of our favorite things about her. But last night she was at the Boohoo.com event in LA sporting a much longer look. Julianne's extensions seamlessly blend with her shorter layers, and we like that she styled the new length with her bangs, but we can't help but miss her lob. What do you think of Julianne with long hair?
2013 will go down in beauty history as the year of the It haircut, and we've got plenty of them to choose from. Jennifer Lawrence recently drove the star power of the pixie up a few notches, but there were plenty of pixies before her. Jada Pinkett Smith also knows a thing or two about It haircuts, as she's recently been sporting 2013's edgy style: the undercut. But 2013's first It haircut was somewhere between edgy and sweet, and it was the lob. Nicole Richie was one of the first ladies to rock this style, and she's kept it all year. All three of these styles are synonymous with 2013, but which was your favorite cut of the year?
Say what you will about Lady Gaga, but the girl has the best wigs in show business — better than Cher and Liza Minnelli combined. This year, she kicked off her ARTPOP album tour, giving us the best hair Gaga had to offer. For her performance at the VMAs, she sang and danced while changing her look five times. We don't know how much of her touring budget is devoted to hair, but there's no doubt that she is the queen of hairpieces. See the most gorgeous (and ghastly) of Gaga's wigs ahead.
