As music festival season approaches, we're mentally bookmarking each and every plait that we want to try, and the chain braid is definitely one we're adding to the rotation. If you find most braids a challenge, never fear! Based on a series of knots, the style isn't as fussy as a five-strand braid and doesn't require as much hair spray or as many pins as a milkmaid braid — all you need is dirty hair and the ability to tie your shoes. Salon Mario Russo broke it down for us in four simple steps.

Step 1

Step 1

Start with voluminous day-old hair — try using hot rollers, a curling iron, or even back-combing if you have superfine strands. As if you were creating a half-up style, pull back the top section of your hair and split it in half. Tie the two pieces in a knot like you would a pair of shoelaces.

Step 2

Step 2

Like you were french braiding, add hair from each side and knot the two sections of hair again.

Step 3

Step 3

Repeat this faux-french-braid process until you've knotted the entire length of your hair and have no more strands left to add. Secure with a clear elastic.

Step 4

Step 4

Gently tug at the knots to add texture and fatten up the braid. Lock down your style with a light-hold hair spray like Bumble and Bumble Does It All Styling Spray ($28).
