Cleopatra Eyeliner How-To

Cleopatra Liner Makes a Comeback

When most of us think of "Egyptian"-style eyeliner, the first thing that comes to mind is Elizabeth Taylor chewing scenery in 1963 drama-fest Cleopatra. And over the past few months, it's a look that's certainly been inspiring designers and makeup artists. From big brands like Gucci and Jean Paul Gaultier to indie lines like Electric Feathers (shown above), thick, defined eye makeup, which combines the shape of traditional winged liner with the dramatic size of smoky eyes, is de rigueur.

To try the look yourself, use liquid liner to draw on a normal winged shape. Then, fill it in for intensity, and draw the line out further — right out to the end of your eyebrow. On your bottom lash line, instead of waterlining or following the curve of your eye, draw a line below your lashes and pull it straight out. It's not necessary for the top and bottom lines to meet. In fact, the more space in between, the edgier it is. Now all you need is an old tape of "Walk Like an Egyptian" by The Bangles.
