Do You Color Your Hair the Same Shade as Your Natural Hue?

The other day in the ladies' room, I noticed a big old gray hair front and center. My friend next to me suggested that I start coloring my hair to get rid of this wiry strand and to disguise any errant grays within. But the thing is that I already do color my hair, pretty much the exact same shade as the hue I inherited through genetics.

The main reason I dye my hair so closely to my natural hue is to add a little extra texture and to bump up the warmth just a bit. What about you? If you color your hair, do you stick within the same range as what you were born with, or do you veer off into all sorts of directions?

These days, I don't dye my hair. I like my natural color. I have a lot of gray hair, as I've been graying since I was a teenager. Premature graying runs in my family. I have an uncle and cousin who were completely gray in their 30's.Besides, I like that my gray hair is a tell-tale sign that I'm really older than I look. The rest of me looks remarkable young for my age (I get mistaken for person half my age. It's embarrassing). I like that my gray hair may remind others I'm older than I look.

I've been every color of the rainbow, but now I dye it a shade similar to my natural color. Naturally my hair is kind of mousy and dull so by dying it, it punches it up and adds dimension. The nice thing about keeping it close to my natural color is that I can go much longer without touching it up. Especially helpful because my mom is my hairdresser and I don't see her for months on end while I'm at school.

Yeah, I stick close to my natural hair color. I have brownish red hair, but I like it a little redder sometimes. Also my eyebrows are much darker than my hair, I really want to try what it would look like if I dyed my hair dark brown.

As a teen I would get my hair dyed/highlighted and have a tinted glaze thrown in; I never tried any "wild shades", just hues within my color range and varying highlights (amber, caramels, etc.) After so many years of dealing with fading & failed root up-keep, I have sworn off anymore coloring, at least for the next couple of years. My natural shade is more than half-way through now and I realized how much I missed it. Sometimes it might look dull in bad lighting however in the sunlight the natural highlights of gold-ish tones bring a subtle shine. In the future, if I decide to have my hair colored in any way, I will go to salon just that uses a more "safe" coloring system. A line of dye that delivers fewer toxins while giving a natural looking brilliance. But for now I'm cool with my own hair hue.

I've tried a variety of shades, but now I keep my hair in the blonde range because thinning hair runs in my family, and I want to minimize the contrast with my scalp! In the meanwhile, I'm pregnant, so I went back to my natural colour (dark blonde). I've also been getting highlights a shade or two lighter to blend in my greys (rather than cover them).

I color my hair a few shades darker to cover the gray and give it a deeper, warmer tone.

I don't dye, I like my natural color. The grays are starting to creep in, and I hope they come evenly. I actually like that salt/pepper to full gray look. But if I inherit my mom's pattern of graying--patches in different places--I'll have to think about getting on the coloring bandwagon.

When I was young I used to spend a lot of time coloring my hair ANYTHING but my natural color or my mother's color, which was a honey-brunette (me) or a fiery ginger-red (my mother). As I've gotten older I've grown to not only be at peace with my color and my heritage (pure-blood Irish), but to extend this peace with my hair color as well. I haven't colored it in awhile, but for the past few years I've stuck fiercely with native Irish red. Long live the gingers!

I do I do :) I had pink streaks almost two years ago now, but even after I've dyed over it sometimes I still see trace amounts of bleach in pictures + flash, so I have to keep dying my hair dark brown to keep it under control until it grows out and I can cut it. Plus it makes my hair really soft too (for a few days at least). weird!

yes, I color my hair the same shade as my natural. I just do it to cover all the gray hairs. =D

I have dark skin, so nothing really looks good on me but my natural color. If anything, I'd add a highlight here or there or darken my hair slightly. I still get my hair colored regularly because it does brighten up the color.

I've gone from platinum blonde, to red, to brown, back to blonde...but yes, I now stick with my natural color level (a level 6) with a platinum streak of blonde in my bangs under a few strands of brown. :) Working in a hair salon, you never see the stylists with the same haircolor for too long. :)

In middle school, I dyed my hair all sorts of Manic Panic colors. For the majority of high school, I dyed my hair black. Last year of high school, I dyed my hair red and kept that for a few years. Then I went to dark brown, then to medium brown, then back to black for awhile. Just a few months ago, I stripped the black and dyed it a medium ash brown (my natural color borders on medium/dark ash brown) and have been growing it out to get a full head of virgin hair back (almost there!!!). Once I have my virgin hair back... well, who knows haha. I have a hair-coloring addiction I think. I don't like my natural color very much, I find it dull and boring. It's quite ashy. I think I want to try something lighter once I have my natural hair back.

I used to dye my hair red, which is no where near my natural color. Then I decided to chop off my hair into a pixie cut to grow out my natural color. The thing is, if I dyed my hair the same color as it is naturally, I'd lose all of my gorgeous natural highlights, which nature gave me in abundance. So, no. It would make my hair look more dull!
