Sesame Street Encourages Girls to Love Their Hair

Just a few days after their great Smell Like a Monster skit starring my beloved Grover, Sesame Street has gone and melted my heart all over again. "I Love My Hair" is a sweet, adorable song encouraging kids with curls to love their natural texture. It's not the most complicated ditty, but given how much negative social pressure is put on people with curly hair, it's good to hear lines like "don't need a trip to the beauty shop, 'cause I love what I've got on top." Even if you're already old enough to know just how gorgeous natural hair is, watch the clip and smile.

It is an empowering song for African-American girls to embrace their natural texture (the intended audience) and for others' to appreciate the natural texture. So, it's not about all people with curly hair; but, rather a very specific group and that's awesome.
