Recently I was shopping around in a toy store looking for gifts for the wee ones in my family when I came across a make-your-own lipstick kit. It came equipped with a sparkly container, food coloring, and what appeared to be a generic brand of Pixy Stix to flavor the gloss. I read the contents and the directions on the back and thought I'd share this simple recipe with you. And don't worry, this one's more exciting than just mashing up your old blush. What can I say, I guess the kid in me will never tire of rolling up my sleeves for a fun, hands-on project. Here's what you'll need:

For three fool-proof directions, read more.
- STEP 1: In a small mixing bowl stir the petroleum jelly, 1/4 tsp. of hot water, and the Pixy Stix until the sugar is dissolved.
- STEP 2: Then, slowly add in one drop of food coloring and a pinch of glitter. Stir well and quickly. Continue to add in food coloring and flavoring until you reach your desired taste and color. Let the mixture cool for about three minutes.
- STEP 3: Scoop out the contents in the bowl and neatly pack it into a clean, empty lip gloss container — voila!

i'm going to do this with my little cousin
1i used to love DIY stuff like this. this sounds so juvenile though... that chunky glitter... ick! lol
2This also can work really well if instead of food coloring (which can stain the rims of your lips if your lips are chapped) if you use old lipstick. When my lipstick is almost used up, but the color is a good one (bonus points if it's a discontinued shade!) I do the same thing (minus the glitter and flavoring) with a little bit of petroleum jelly and the stub tube of lipstick. Works like a charm, lets me keep my fave color in a neat new gloss and I don't waste the perfectly good product left over.
Cecilia baby (lol, that sounds so funny to write!) You could leave out the glitter and just do a plain gloss. I've also heard really great things from a friend of mine who used some unused reddish/plum mineral powder eyeshadow from Everyday Minerals to make a lipgloss (pretty much the same thing as above but you use the mineral powder shadow as a pigment, rather than dyes)
Bella, I absolutely LOVE this feature - there's just something about cooking up cosmetics that's so fun!
3i love this! i make eye glitter using a similar recipe -- no food colouring though, of course!
4Great post!
5Looks like lots of fun
6Thanks! DIY articles are the best!
7This one is much less fussy than others and I think it'd be fun to make with kids. You have to be careful with some glitter though - if it's too coarse it can cause small cuts in the mouth..
8What kind of glitter do you use? I wouldn't want to use small metal or plastic flakes--that can't be safe to ingest. Maybe there is some sort of ground up mineral you can use, like the glitter they use in mineral makeup?
9This looks fun to try!
10This would be cute to do with a little girl.

12Very cool. Will definetly try it!
13I like the idea about using up the end of some lipstick Redrover! Thanks for the ideas
14This looks amazing! It would be great for creating some really wild vibrant shades that despite being huge this season, are relatively hard to come by. Who wants to spend loads on a one season lipstick anyway?
I will def be making this, with EXTRA glitter!
15I love this idea, and i think i am going to try it today!
16Whee, I'm all over that!
17PETROLEUM JELLY? are you serious? have you googled that stuff?
18this is so cute.
19wont the glitter look garish?
20there are glittery eyeshadows and cosmetic powders that you can use that is more refined instead of the craft glitter.
21redrover189 has an awesome idea about the lipstick.. im totally gonna do this with my d/c lipcolors!
22Is the glitter safe to put on lips?
